i was just doing a disc cleanup and saw the hibernation file had over 2gb in it.
before i deleted it i thought i would see what hibernating done as ive never used it before. now i cant turn my computer back on anymore.actually thats a lie as the computer is still running with all the lights on but the mouse and screen have switched off. pressing the alien on/off head does nothing.
please dont tell me i have to disconnect the battery to get the thing going again.

did you hit the power button? if you havent try that to turn it back on
-
that was the first thing i tried.
ive been on to support and ive just had to remove the case to get to a reset switch but that wont even do anything. all the lights are still on and the fans are spinning. ive now tried to remove the battery but that is set fast and i cant move it.
tech support doesnt know what else to do.
GREAT -
Please clarify: did you delete the file? Or did you just try to hibernate and now it doesn't turn on anymore?
Normally, to de-hibernate a computer, you have to press the power button. But if you deleted the file, that's way more complicated. The normal way to turn hibernation off (in Windows XP) is going to Control Panel --> Power Options --> "Hibernate" tab --> Deselect the checkbox. -
Hm, did you by chance hit the fn+f8 combination? If you didnt hit that by accident then i would suggest you power it down and not use the hibernation feature.
Also, isnt the hibernation file created when the computer is put into hibernation, plus if he did have it disabled why would his computer go into hibernation in the first place? -
firstly thanks for all the ideas guys.
as ive only had the computer for 10 days and had major problems with it with many calls to TS i didnt want to delete the file once i done a disc clean up just in case it is needed when i return it.
ive never used hibernation before and was just curious what it did compared to sleep mode so i thought i would find out. i dont like the way you have to go into start to turn it off so i added a sidebar gadget with the options of: standby, shutdown, restart log off & hibernate. i pressed hibernate to see what it did and the screen and mouse switched off. everything else was still on including all the light fx and fans. i rang support and he said to remove the bottom case and to press a reset button next to a round battery. this done nothing. i tried removing the battery but because i had left the clear sticky cover on it it was holding it in place (silly me,DOH!)
ive now got the battery off and am about to put it back and try again.
ill report back in 5. (before you ask, im using my other laptop to type this). -
everything sorted.
i cant believe i had to remove the battery to get the computer back on again.
vista, i hate it. -
so many people say that. dual boot is sounding better and better... is linux/ubuntu any good for office work etc.?
-
ive now deleted the file for hibernation on disc cleanup. i suggest everyone do the same just in case they have the same problem.
-
FYI hibernation is nearly the same as sleeping mode with the big difference that when you put your system to sleep, the data in your ram is kept (thus it still consumes a bit of power) whereas with hibernation the complete ram is written onto your HDD and the system powers off completely! So the file you deleted was just the space vista kept free on your HDD to save your ram when you want to go hiber!
-
thanks for that crizzler. i understand the difference now.
cheers.
so hows the returned computer doing. is it behaving itself. -

whoa whoa. don't slam vista. You deleted the hibernate file!
this is not an AW or even a Vista problem.
once you get used to vista, you can't go back to OSX/XP... Vista is just too glorious. -
my m15x wont go to sllep no matter what I do, the fans keep running....
-
Do you have Vista Service Pack 1 installed yet?
-
yes I do.....
-
I have no idea what the problem is...do you know if anyone else here has the same problem as you do? Does hibernation work for you though?
-
yes it works, instead of sleep
-
make sure you look in AlienFusion I had problem once where I had it do nothing while on battery and the lid closed. I closed the Lid and I would get mad cause it wouldn't go to sleep it would just get hotter. Then I saw that I had changed that option. I'm just wondering have you tried to hit the start orb and then do sleep to see if that works.
-
im not blaming AW for this one BUT vista is on their system and it didnt do what it said it should do. if you say its not an AW or vista problem and your computer didnt switch back on what would you do, use it as a door stop. i dont know the phone number for ghostbusters so i rang AW.
the reason i posted it on here was support had never heard of this problem before so he said it needed to be reset. take the bottom off and press the reset button. is this what you would normally do after using a button on your desktop for putting your computer into hibernation.
let me explain one more time as you posted above that i deleted the hibernate file.
firstly i done a disc cleanup and i saw the hibernate file in there using up over 2gb of space. I DID NOT DELETE THE HIBERNATE FILE AT THIS POINT.
as i might be returning the computer next week to get a lot of other problems sorted out i thought i would not delete that file just in case it was needed.
i then thought what was the difference between sleep and hibernate so i thought i would find out. i pressed hibernate on the gadget in my side bar. the screen switched off and so did the mouse. everything else stayed on. all the AW FX lights and the fans. i then tried to get it back on from hibernation. nothing worked. none of the buttons or the AW head on/off. i unplugged it from the mains and tried again. nothing worked. all the lights and fans were still running.
that is why i rang support.
they had never heard of this before so instructed me to remove the 8 screws to the bottom plate and press a reset button. this done nothing.
in the end i removed the battery which finally reset everything.
it then booted up as normal.
now your telling me that this is not an AW or vista problem. Hmmm!
if its not an AW problem could you tell me why all the lights and fans stayed running.
or
if its not a vista problem then is this the normal practice to have to remove your battery to get the computer to turn back on after putting it into hibernation.
once everything was back up and running THAT IS WHEN I DELETED THE HIBERNATION FILE and not before.. -
MrDJ, I fully agree that is a problem. Most probably it's AW's problem, because I know many people who can hibernate in Vista with no problems.
Still, I don't think you should have deleted the hibernation file. There must be an option to not use hibernation somewhere, and if you use that option and reboot the file will be gone. -
too late now HerrKaputt, its gone.
thanks anyway. -
i Believe this to be a vista problem. I actually have the opposite problem... I can Hibernate, but not sleep. when i put the computer to sleep, it doesn't come back... it goes into it fine, and the little alien head pulsates as it's supposed to, but when i hit the power again, it just kinda spins up and looks at me like a lost kitten... screen blank, no OS, nothing. i touch the power button for less than a second and the thing powers down (usually it's 3 seconds to hard-power-off the system... this is a good alternative to pulling the battery, hold power for 3 seconds. fyi) ... the system reboots with the error dialog and says it's searching for a solution...
one is never found but whatever. I've totally disabled the sleep function now, and I only use Hibernate.
Another problem. Hiberfil.sys (the hibernate RAM image) frequently gets corrupted, and won't load on power-up. it gives me an error (text-mode) during boot, and says hit enter to continue... the system then boots normally (fresh boot). I don't leave any unsaved data open when going into hibernation, nor do I really leave much going at all (i try to restrcit the amount of things in memory when hibernating)... so I rarely ever lose any data, but in the same breath, it's annoying.
I'm thinking a fresh install of vista, with SP1, and all that will likely fix my problem.
I'll be doing that in September, when, as a student, I get access to the academic alliance, and M$ gives me a free copy of Vista Business. -
basically, i have the "sleep does nothing but hibernate works" problem. i tested it using the lid close function first, and when it apparently goes into sleep all it does is turn the screen off, everything else stays on, lights fans, etc. so i had to enable the hibernate feature through windows power options, and set it to hibernate, which works perfectly, is probably a lot better than sleep as its does the same, but uses no power, and maybe takes a few secs longer to reboot back to your desktop.
so, yes, sleep doesnt work and it should, surely? but its a minor problem because hibernate is better in my eyes. its obviously a vista problem as its software based.the computer is just not doing what your telling it to.i however am also on the pro vista side. i havent experienced any problems on my desktop in the last year using vista and think its pretty decent. -
i wish i had gone with xp now.
