Hello everyone. I have officially decided after weeks and weeks of reading through the alienware subforum at nbrf and rereading the 'why not to get the m15x thread' i have decided that the high risk of getting all these problms is not worth 4k of money. It is expecially risky as i actually planned on importing the m15x from america to down under and dont know if american warranty applies ovr here. I have decided to ditch the awesome neonish lights, the sleek sliver design, the 8800GTX and the X9000 (this is makin me sad) and go with the acer aspire gemstone blue 8920. It has the T9500 CPU, the 9650 GPU, a bluray drive ( dunno if burner) and an18 in screen. It costs about 2300 US, which would save me a full 2000 bucks... So unless alienware srsly improve their customer service/build qualtiy of m15x or refresh it with montevina and fix most issues, ima going to get the acer

Btw, im on my ipod so there might be alot of spelling errors

Good for you! Why did you think about the m15x when you are alright getting a 18 inch screen? There are a lot of other computers out there that would give you more bang-for-the-buck and better performance overall if you are ready to go for a bigger screen...

    @both of u
sagers are pretty bang for the buck, but thy look , um, bad. Also 2300 bucks for a maxed out unit i think is even more b4b than xoticpc deals. And the m860tu is, well, grey and diaguting. Besides, do i really need DDR3 Ram or the most powerful mobile GPU and CPU in a small lappy thats gonna get really hot, fat and heavy and looks bad as well?

I'd say you should wait for Montevina laptops to be released on the market. You might regret getting an Acer (which from my point of view is very very uncool).

Awww... Gaz. I'm sure that this was a really, really hard decision to make. I can just imagine how heartbreaking these forums could seem to somebody with doubts (me being one of those people too).

If you really, really want to turn your back on the M15x, why don't you check out this thread I started for people to post up alternative suggestions to the eye candy that is the M15x. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=3545158#post3545158
I don't think anything out there quite matches up to the M15x in style just yet, but it's an option for you to have a look at everyones suggestions.

Milcs gets his replacement M15x back very soon, and we're all waiting with baited breath on his review. If it's a mainly positive review, I may go ahead and buy the M15x. Perhaps you should hang on a little longer to see if there is any hope with this model. You never know... in a couple of months they may bring out the black model or put in a new CPU or both. There may be some vast improvements with the M15x in a matter of months. It may be worth hanging in there for a little longer, if you really had your heart set on this model. I know I do... but, like you, I've been torn by common sense, money sense, and impulse.

wow you addressed it to the wrong person

    @Qaz
If you figured out that you dont need the specs and looks are a bit more important i think that the dell xps m1530 might be right for you. the performance in that machine is actually still up there and i think it looks pretty good. According the the dell forum its a pretty solid machine too. If you live close to Best Buy you can test out the m1530 in person.

Quite a few recently have only been having creaking and wobbliness probs. The odd 'key-popping-off' too but that along with the 2/3 cases of faulty GPUs a while back would be fixed by a shipment from AW once the problem was logged. Just trying to keep spirits bouyed here :)
Take a look at the General index and the Survey graphs & stats thread too for some current data and reviews.

actually, after looking at the studio 17 from Dell with all specs maxed out. Acer does have a history of bad quality and bad cost service. If i was ever going to get a Dell, id get the studio. It has a backlit keyboard and a sweet grey design. But shame the gpu is so crap :(. The m1530 has always looked quite bland to me. But who knows, alienware might release a m15z with all issues solved, monty and black case :p

    @Gunsmith

/me wonders what's wrong with buying the m860TU and then putting a custom design on the laptop stops it from being 'ugly'?

/me also thinks thoughts will change when people actually start getting the laptop and taking their own user screenshots of it.

/me will think aloud and leave the crowd to themselves for a bit. 2 weeks approx.

Double Data Rate and to further clarify, this means that the memory data is clocked on both the rising and falling clock edges. Most DRAM nowadays is DDR.

i guess its what makes them look bad that they are/were used by the most prestigious boutique brands like voodoo, killernotebooks, kobalt and rock ect..^_^

your laptop doesnt have to be a glowing thief target to look nice. i think they are sleek and stylish. people will know you dont have a cheap laptop if you have the 570ru/tu or m860tu.

    Its not greay, its black.
also we dont know if it will overheat. clevo have had a past history of being VERY good with their cooling systems so what makes you think they would start now?

How will it get fatter? you going to inject coligen in it?
also as stated by the m860tu manual, the m860tu is lighter than the m15x. it even features a silent mode button too!

importing Sager/ALienware or any expensive notebook from overseas to Australia is really not viable and in Australia the NP5973 is aether = to the price of the Australian m15x or more expensive with = hardware.

also the clevo/sager resellers in Australia are not big and ive talked to afue people who have got "REALLY old/used/scratched LCD pannels etc) put in them... so yerrr for 4grand AUS talk about rip off..

Sending a laptop back to the states for repair from Australia is like 250 each way :(

u have to go big brand for support/trust down here its a bummer.

Ive been made fun of this view before but i think its fairly clear with the success of brands like Apple and Dells XPS line than taking pride in the aesthetics of personal devices is popular. For you the image you present to the world may not be important but to the majority of people it is.
if you say style and distinction are of no value why do u have such a unique and interesting user pic for example?

well this avatar did not cost me 4grand, or anything for that matter. thanks for noticing my illustration though.

sure looks are important, but not to the extent that you spend hundreds or thousands more. I especially mean it when people come onto the sager forums about the M860tu and all they can say is "sure its great, but its ugly" as if thats the only thing that matters. Its quite a shallow outlook.

From my personal expeirence, Acer hasn't been amazing... this might be because my Acer laptop was on the low end. I love the screen, and it didn't come with lots of bloat ware, but the audio quality, and stregnth of the keyboard are terrible. Also, the drivers for the built-in webcam randomly stopped working, and the built-in mic had terrible quality, and my 7" N800 220 pounds internet tablet can pick up more wi-fi hotspots than the 17" 410 pounds(money, not weight :p) Acer laptop can half the time not even pick one up. IDK if this will be different with the higher spec models, but, yeah, that's my expience with Acer.
I've only ever seen one Alien Ware, and to be honest... IT LOOKED AWESOME! I'll admit, the Gemstone looks pretty cool, but I'm with FadeToBlack, Acers are pretty un-cool...

I've given up on alienware also and i highly reccomend xoticpc.com their costomer satisfaction is amazing and teh computers really arent that ugly (custom skin ftw) you can pay the same price at xotic that you would have at AW, for example I was going to purchase the M9750 with the following specs:

    Windows vista home premium
    Dual 512MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8700M GT Sli
    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7200 2.0GHz 4MB Cache 667MHz FSB
    4GB Dual Channel DDR2 SO-DIMM at 667MHz – 2 x 2048MB
hard drive: 250GB 7,200RPM (8MB Cache) w/ Free Fall Protection

and i am going to spend the same amount of money for the Asus from xoticpc for MUCH better specs:

    - !! FREE !! UPS GROUND SHIPPING (Use Coupon Code FREESHIP in Checkout)
    - 17" WUXGA "Glare Type" Super Clear Ultra Bright Glossy Screen (1920x1200)
    - Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound
    - ASUS Zero Bright Dot (ZBD) Pixel Guarantee
    - -Intel® T9400 45nm "Montevina" Core™2 Duo 2.53GHz w/6MB L2 On-die cache - 1066MHz FSB 35 watt - ASUS Default Processor
    - 512MB PCI-Express nVidia GeForce 9600M GS DDR2 DX10
    - ~ 4,096MB DDR2 800 (2 SODIMMS) Dual Channel Memory -
    - Custom Laptop Skins [Choose from our designs or your own Graphic or Logo
(Details of design made after order) (Will cause additional lead time on order)
    - - 2X Blue-Ray Read/8X DVDRW Super Multi Combo Drive
    - - 500GB SATA 150 5400RPM Hard Drive
    - - 500GB SATA 150 5400RPM Hard Drive
    - Internal 8-in-1 Card Reader: MMC/SD/Mini-SD/XD/Memory Stick/MS Pro/MS Duo/MS Pro Duo
    - Internal Bluetooth 2.0+ EDR
    - Built-in Intel® PRO/Wireless 5100 802.11 a/g/n
    - Built in 1.3Megapixel Camera
    - Internal Digital TV Tuner with Remote Control
    - Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi 7.1 Xtreme Audio Notebook Express Card
    - Basic Black Business Case - Included
    - Smart Li-ion Battery (8-Cell)
    - Integrated Fingerprint Reader
    - Asus USB Optical Mouse
    - -Windows Vista Ultimate 64-Bit w/ Drivers & Utilities CD's
    - 3 Year ASUS GLOBAL Warranty, 24/7 DOMESTIC Technical Support, 1 Year Accidental Damage Coverage & 2-Way Overnight Shipping for Warranty

you get all this extra crap for the same price, I am not totally set on this lappy but i am strongly leaning towards it. Plus they have a solid warranty.

You should read the essay about where all the "Popular brands" get their base computers from, its very interesting :)

so anyways... like i said I highly reccomend xoticpc and i dont even own one yet lol

@Dis - The 9600 is slower than the Dual 8700GTs so you are actually NOT getting more power out of it.

    1. 9800GTX
    2. 9800GT / 8800GTX
    3. 7950GTX SLi
    4. 8700GT SLi
    5. 9800GTS (can be faster than the 8700GT though).
