Recently I've been given the opportunity to upgrade my replacement laptop's processor to the i5-520M free of charge with my due to recent issues with my current Alienware. My question is, for everyday multi-tasking as well as gaming, should I keep my Q9000 or go for the i5?

The i7 proc has the memory controller built in making it the superior processor.

So I should persuade Alienware to get me an i7-720QM? If I can't, would the Q9000 be better or the i5-520M?

why not i7-620M? after the horrible quad core issue with M17, I simply don't trust quad cores.

For me quad cores are like "future-proofing" your laptop. Either i7 would be great though, just curious between i5-520M and Q9000.

Sooooo much better! I would try if I were you.

I don't think you'll miss the q9000 much at all. Especially if you get the 720qm.

I dunno. the Alienware manager was nice in giving me an upgrade, I just have to get back to him on whether to accept the i5 or keep the q9000, or try to persuade my way into an i7.

EDIT: BTW, no one has answered my question yet.

Even though the 520M is still enough and better than your q9000, you can always insist that the replacement is not equal as you have a quad core (that's what you purchased back then) and it scores more in benchmarks and games ;) Maybe they'll buy it and give you the 720M

    this

The worst they can say is no. Tell them that you asked your friends and they all told you that you should get a real quad, not a dual core.

But if its the 520 or q9000 you really ought to get the newer platform and leave the q9000 in your rear view mirror. Folks are having fewer problems with the new chips. And the newer platform (you get the Intel chipset with the i5 CPU) means more upgrade choices in the future.

Anything with the Core-i proc is what you want. C2D is dying out.

sorry for the obvious answer to my question but, am I missing something here?

if he asks to get the i5 it means they'll have to replace the whole motherboard, right? cause M17x-R1s do not support i5 or i7s, right?

    just wondering if I misinterpreted.

    thanks,

If he is offering you i5-520M then you will be getting a new R-2 system pm55.So your current system R-1 will be replaced.

They're giving me a new system, and offered to upgrade my processor. Well I just accepted that offer and asked if they could give me an i7, hopefully they accept that request :D.

If they refuse to give you the i7 take the new system anyway, at least you can upgrade to a i7 yourself later on.

Hello, I was jw how exactly you were able to get a free upgrade out of this?
I had horrendous problems myself and spoke to at least 2 managers who informed me that it is Dell's policy to not offer and "upgrades" or perks for severe inconvience. When they finally did send me my replacement (the same exact model but wrong color) I just kept my old lappy's battery and AC adapeter just to get SOMETHING for my troubles. humph they'll prolly end up charging me for it.

But anyway my question was how exactly were you able to do this, who did you speak to and what were your problems?
Thanks so much, and best of luck with your new replacement.

When I got my replacement processed I specifically asked for it. It all depends on the issues and what has been documented on your account.
Regular tech people usually refuse to do this. I have always had my account sent to the escalations team and they are the ones that always give free upgrades.

The escalations team messed up my replacement order :\.

Dell's policy allows them to offer upgrades, I dont know why the manager told you that. If they said they would replace it for you and they dont send an exact replacement, including color, then refuse the replacement and ask for another one. I had the same problem like yours. I was going through many issues with my Alienware, and decided to ask if I could just get a replacement because of the numerous amounts of parts that needed to be replaced. They agreed to, but the replacement had lower specs, and was a completely different color. Frustrated, I e-mailed Michael Dell with a complaint, and I got someone from the corporate office that was specifically addressed to fix all my issues and offer me an upgrade and/or a replacement. Now instead of the Q9000, 260Ms, and old screen I had, I have an i5 system on the way with all my old stuff + more, specifically the ATI 4870s, the i5, and the RGB screen are upgrades for me.

If I were you, I would send an e-mail out to someone from the corporate office, whether it would be Michael Dell or not. They do read those, and act accordingly. The people from the technical support department aren't very knowledgeable and in my experience with them, they tend not to offer upgrades or try to avoid giving any compensation. My managers and tech support people I talked to were a headache.

If you give me your e-mail address, I could e-mail the guy who is currently working with me to make sure everything is correct and my replacement order is coming to me smoothly without error. You paid lots of money for this system; don't let them boss you around tell you you cant have this or do this when you're system isn't working as intended.

BTW, they wont give me an i7. ):

yep i had sim problem i told them :

a their meant to have the laptop back within 1 month

b is it fit for purpose

this is what i ended up doing with my m17 to get a money refund as they kept messing around with the laptop, i was over the moon when the 30days was up ( uk) not sure about other countries.

told em i was well within my rights and if i didnt get same or better system or cash back i would sue them for 20x what the laptop was worth as dell i my eyes thought they were to big a fish for me to take on and i would use that angle as well as nbr to put my case forward.

but im still getting another laptop of alienware as this is the only time ive ever had a problem with them in the last 6 years.
