Had my R2 a while now,Was my intension originally when it arrived to apply my own choice of Thermal paste but the temps have been so good i have never bothered. One thing as its a dual die package 32nm for the cpu & 45nm for the igp,memory/PCIe controller.TDP in total for whole package is 35W but noticed that my current TDP is only 25W i am assuming that because the Intel HD graphics is not being used on the 45nm side of the package is this the reason??.Core2D is a great platform but with this its so much better on a day to day basis cannot recommend it more. With the memory controller on die feels a lot more efficient & with the 3.33 ghz on single core & 3.06 ghz Dual core plus the Hyper-Threading its a good experience overall.Have not seen it struggle yet with anything i have thrown at it.With the low temps & low power consumption + the performance on a laptop i would struggle to find a reason for my personal usage to go for a i7 Quad. ;)

wow very nice temps mate, almost makes me not want to get the 820/920. The 920 seems to get really hot from what I've seen, well ppl posting about it.

Aye the temps are great even under load cpu/gpu's have been really low when i have looked at other owners M17x R2 temps.I know Scotland is cold ;) but think i was lucky with the build of this machine.Only thing i am curious about is my TDP of 25W for package .

Good to hear your finally going to get a working M17x.You wont be disappointed with the i7 620M .I originally had a T9800 with my R1 which was a good performer but 620M blows it away.Link below of a stock run on Vantage so you know what to expect. ;)

Yeah even though you cannot use the integrated graphics because Dell/Alienware chose the PM55 chipset instead of the HM55,I would still give it a 10/10. But hey would have been a nice feature to have Intel HD graphics with the HM55 i am sure it would have been great on battery using integrated. Thanks for rep ;)

So from what I understand here and other threads the nice integrated graphic technology in the i7 620m is disabled in our mighty machines?? Hmmm.... what is the reason for this?

i can very much agree to this with my own 620m maximum using 28 watts max used HWMoniter to find this out also max temps 57c while benching this is with stock paste still but intend to have new thermal paste soon as i like to have a cold laptop

The reason for this is there is 5 compatible chipset's for the i7 620M which are
    PM55
    HM55
    HM57
    QM57
    QS57
The chipset we have on the R2 is the PM55 which is the only one out of the 5 options of compatible chipsets that does not include the option of integrated graphics unfortunately.Maybe Dell overlooked this when choosing the chipset as the price difference is about $10 between most expensive to cheapest. There might be some reason they chose the PM55 i dunno. ;)

If that's the only price difference, then it makes no sense not to have a chipset with integrated graphics!

Perhaps there are other difference we aren't aware of lol

Even if the chipset had support for integrated graphics, you wouldn't be able to use it without either Nvidia Optimus or specialised motherboard hardware (i.e. a multiplexer for the video outputs).

Maybe there is a stability issue with the other chipsets and the graphics. Think about it as its less for them to worry about and even if the cost difference is $1 per machine thats alot of savings they get. From a business standpoint its the right choice, for us who pay a premium to get an alienware should have a choice when building. Granted I cannot afford to be on the bleeding edge, but this sounds alot better then the stealth mode for off AC computing and might allow me to reach the same battery life as my current dell. I just cannot afford for my main rig to be down due to instabilities and such.

As for the temps they do look nice! I only hope my 720QM will run cool until I decide to re paste it. I am thinking around the first time I do a dusting I'll re-paste everything.

Decided to see what battery life i could achieve with min brightness,AlienFx off,Crossfire disabled.Surfing the net on wireless i managed a healthy 1 hour 42 mins its obviously no where near what i could get with the R1 which was about 2 hours 30 mins on the 9400.Min brightness with the RGB is no problem as its still quite bright.Abusing the i7 620M on prime 95 the highest it went was 52c where the TJ max is a 105c so 53c breathing space from max load temp  .The thermal status of the i7 620M is superb.
