HP (and probably others) officially has x40's available for many systems as of today!
AW must join the action soon and reduce the pricing for their processors in general.
For example, today I got the 720QM -> 8 40QM upgrade for 200$. Lenovo has similar pricing for CPU upgrades.
It's high time Dell followed, IMHO.
-
I would guess you would see a system bios upgrade for them soon then.
-
BIOS already support them, Joker has one running in his M17xR2, M15x got the BIOS update last BIO release.
-
The 940xm is recognized but runs at 920 speeds cuz of the 24x multi.
-
Does it allow more stable over-clocking? I was also wondering how much over-clock it allows before the M17x starts flickering on benchmarks and/or games.
-
Dell usually updates its website on Wednesdays or Sundays for updates. If other brands have those CPU you can probably expect Dell to also have them very soon. Let's wait until Wednesday.
-
If I placed an order today and they updated, say, this Wednesday or the next, could I easily switch to a 740 from a 720? Will prices go up or stay the same on them?
-
You would have 30 days from the invoice date to return your system and change it to a new system with different specs.
Most likely the price of the 740 will be the current price of the 720.
Also, remember gains will be truly limited in between both CPU. -
True, that's why I'm not too terribly concerned about the whole matter, but if I can get a gain, then why not? It seems like build times are somewhat long for AW so it made sense that they may not have even begun building it yet and so the switch could be made easily before it was even shipped to me. The question is would they do it before shipping it to me or make me send it back and take even longer? -
If this releases before my order is shipped im gonna call to get it changed otherwise I'm not too worried about it.
-
To make changes to existing orders they normally force you to cancel and reorder.
-
So if I got a good deal today, I might not get a good deal when I reorder?
EDIT: Yeah, I guess that's it. Kinda lame if the pricing between the two is pretty much the same. -
Yeah i don't see it at all just check a bit ago, I agree with you joker the 920 and 940EX is not going to be much of a difference.
-
In the end I got the 840QM upgrade for free
, and keeping in mind that it was 2.8ghz to 3.2ghz boost - it's going to make a difference. It's like having a 920XM with no OC'ing in the BIOS...which sux

Megacharge Custom User Title
Nice. I'll probably end up getting an ES 840QM for my girlfriend's M17x. -
Does she also game like crazy?
-
Megacharge Custom User Title
No but she will probably start playing more games now. She really loves the RGB LED, and the style, as well as AlienFX.
-
You're a lucky man bro! I need to find me a woman like that haha!
-
i'm planing on getting a new lapy somewhen around this sumer is there any other I7 or GPU release planned or would i be better of waiting till CES 2011 to see if there is new GPU or CPU out ?
girls like that exist in quite a big quantitie the prob is that just like us they tends to stay on thier computer lol i got lucky and found one the only draw back is that she trys to loot my m17 and play on it every time she can lol -
The next really big upgrade happens early next year around CES. It all depends on how bad you need to upgrade.

Is it just me or the long build time, 30 days return period, the fast pace development of computer technology and TONS of speculations in Alienware are contributing to the fact that people keep waiting, ordering, cancelling, returning and... again waiting
-
They just flip them and send the returned systems as new. Time to build is how long it takes them to get a new name plate.
-
for me it's not juste the fast pace my m17 with dual 4850s still have plenty of power and if i get my hand on a QX9300 it's GG
and the fact that i ordered a system that got classified as obsolete 2 month later kinda pissed me off so i'd like to get something that would not get obsolete befor i even get into it -
for free?
I need to call up my Rep about the 740 >_> I still have my $100 coupon hehe. -
so i guess this is the last upgrade to m15x + m17x before sandy bridge. I guess i'm gonna sell my m17x and use my desktop till sandy bridge comes out. Then I'm gonna order a fully specced out top of the line m15x sandy bridge and pray they include graphics switching so I can get decent battery. There is no excuse for sandy bridge notebooks to not have graphics switching. It's going to be a standard built in feature on all sandy bridge chip sets.
-
Doubt it. 7 months is a long time.
-
My order was delayed for 2 months, so it was the least they could do.
-
2months? Wow, yeah, the least the could do.
-
i7-x40's are available, AW should hurry up!
