After its installed and i run it i get crazy screen flicker from black to white while it runs! i have SLI turned on - as far as im aware this supports this option? ive not updated any of the graphic card drivers as im not sure how to do this? do i just go into system, then ddevice manager, and update it the drivers that way? i have sli 280's... thnx guys, id be lost with out ya

    its farcry 2 btw

    Hi adrian890,
I'm going to load up a game of far cry this afternoon to see what everyone is talking about. Have you tried patching the game by chance? Also, if there's a vsync option (can't remember where it is), you might want to try and enable it. I know that it cures flicker in Cyrsis.

Edit: The stock driver is probably the best driver out of the two. The beta driver produces some issues

    Thanks
    Gabe

You're going to see two drivers. One of them will be called a beta driver. I wouldn't recommend installing the beta driver. It will produce more issues in your games.

    Thanks,

thnx for the reply mate, confused here ;P

i sorted them to 'urgent' on the drivers list for the M17x, i dont see any beta drivers in the information about them.

also once downloaded do i just click to run and install the drivers?

Click on the little blue icon with the wrench to execute it. It will want to unzip the files to the C drive. If you want to put the files somewhere else, you can point it to any location. After you unzip the files, it will automatically start the installer. Follow the prompts and you should be set. Also, depending on what you're installing, you might want to uninstall your current video driver.

    Thanks,
    Gabe

Far Cry seams to be an issue on the M17X. I'll have to put it to the test this afternoon and look at the results. I'll let you know if I can resolve the issue and how.

    Thanks,

Maybe you have a faulty M17x. Or maybe all M17x's have a Far Cry 2 problem, I wouldn't know.

70c under load? if so that is fine, but if the 280's are 70c at idle then you have an issue there.

*edit* how come my GPU is around 65-70 installing a game, and everything else is about 40-50? im a computer noob really ;P

well im browsing and installing fall out 3, duno what i class underload as. the 280's are at 40 C so there fine =) just unsure, i tried warhammer online and i had bad fPS but i think its perhaps because i have SLI enabled for that game? installing fallout 3 now, not sure if sli will be an issue with it or not

then the one you are seeing at 70c is the 9400m which seems to be normal as mine without a cool stays there also and every temp shot i've seen at idle the 9400 has been at 70c or so.

also remember the is no dedicated fan for the 9400m like there are for the discrete gpu's.

Farcry doesn't use the same engine as Crysis. It is a much older engine. But Farcry should run perfect on the M17x.

I would first run it without SLI and if it works perfect then it could be the second video card or the sli cable.

I just had my SLI cable replaced due to blue halos on my screen with SLI enabled.

NO it is not the driver, it is faulty hardware. You next step is to call Dell Support and use your warrenty to have them send a tech out, more than likely you have a bad daughter GPU or SLI cable.

Edit: first go into device manager and right click both the gpus and check the driver details, maybe one didn't update correctly.

man this is fking a joke, being boucned around the dell reception dudes, and given wrong alienware numbers, just had to contact alienware directly, and waiting in the que for him to read up on it... this sucks, so far..delays.. and a bugged hardware from what uve said.

with any electronics there is always chance to get bad hardware, until it gets fixed just leave the SLI disalbed the single 280 will still handle the majority of games out there.

Except that unlike a lot of other electronics, these are built special order for each person and are supposed to be adequately tested before being shipped out. Unless something happens during transit, there is little excuse IMO for things like this and Moo's GPU fan being DOA.

doesn't matter, there is and will always be a chance of bad hardware no matter what kind of tests are done. I don't think that dell/aw would knowingly send out a computer with faulty equipment. They don't do full tests like we do once we receive them, all they really do is throw a default image on for that particular hardware configuration and that is pretty much it.

Yes these are bult special order but they are still mass produced and with anything that is mass produced one or two in a batch will be defunct.

Okay, well their process must have changed then. They used to advertise a thorough 21 point inspection, or something like that, part of which would include a burn in period where they ran 3D mark and other utilities to make sure the system worked well. When I got my m9750, there was even a text file right on my desktop showing the burn in results with the 3dmark scores. It's too bad they don't do that anymore.

If he has the correct parts he will fix it on the spot, if not he'll probably have to order it, but you will be able to keep your laptop while you wait which will still be fine as long as you leave sli disabled. I really doubt doing the respawn is going to help.

you mean like a faint high pitched pulse noise? if so yes i hear it also when running games that push the gpu's, I also hear it on my desktop comp. I wouldn't worry about it but you can always point that out to the tech when he comes to be safe.

    Hi adrian890,
Unfortunately, technicians don't work on weekends. This requires special approval. If you want the technician to come on a weekend, you may want to ask him to get approval when he contacts you.
As far as the flickering, I would highly recommend you download the stock driver (meaning the driver that the computer came with). Also, I would highly suggest revmoving McAfee. It cripples performance.
The high pitched noise isn't something that everyone can hear. It's usually the inverter or a compacitor.... although it's most commonly the intverter.
Also, the M17X has the ability to switch from the 9400 to the 260/280 in real time. No restart is required. However, if you boot the computer with just the battery, It usually requires a restart to switch it back to the 260/280.

    Thanks,
    Gabe

I was the one with the bad SLI cable. They sent a tech out on monday with two new GTX280's and I told the guy on the phone to make sure to send the cable too. Well they didn't and low and behold after changing both video cards it didn't fix the problem. They finally sent out the cable on wed and it's fixed now.
