If it doesn't show up you can just try creating a new theme. That happened to my M17x once and the new theme did the trick.

k, so auroralightsfx lets me set a color for the keyboard, and it'll actually light up, too. however, when rebooting, the color doesn't "stay", and the keyboard is dark again. also, the keyboard doesn't show up in CC.

Did you try advanced theme yet?

Also does your Alienware FX Alien head light up green in the systray? If not it could be a conflict.

the weirdest thing just happened. i used the AlienFX Tester (C:\Program Files\Alienware\Command Center\AlienwareAlienFXTester.exe), and it lights up the keyboard, and lets me change the color! but as soon as i close the program, the keyboard "shuts down" again :(

Can you unplug the laptop from power, remove the battery and press the power button a couple of times? Then plug everything back and see what happens?

A power drain may work. Also for the M17x at the very least I know you can boot off the resource DVD and go into Dell diagnostics. Might be able to do it with the a51-m15x also.

Well the keyboard works for me now. It always worked at startup with the same color morphing that I set in Vista. However, when AlienFX started up after logging in, it would just go dark. I created a new advanced theme and it worked! However it still loads the original theme that I had from vista when booting up. After AlienFx resources load it changes to the current setting. Weirdest thing I have ever seen.

I think it has to be a registry conflict somehow: had a similar issue with the touchpad lighting up when I first booted and then going dark after I had logged in. So I knew it was not a hardware issue: the touchpad came to life again in lights as the laptop shut down -- so a software conflict of some sort, registry or services or driver.
So applied the reg fix posted above, checked and unchecked the go to dark feature, stopped and loaded a new profile in Command Centre and finally did the remove battery and re-power suggestion. It was the last one that seemed to work. Now having said that, I have full colours again but on re-booting i did get the error message saying FXController had ceased working -- so I have functinality again but there's something still not in harmony somewhere!

I had the same problem when I did a clean install on my G1 m17x. FXtester showed the keyboard lights were working, but shut off when finished and keyboard wasn't a lighting zone in AlienFX. There was a keyboard light patch that was released that didn't come on the resource disc. If you have the G1 m15x, it might solve your problem (it worked for me), but you'd have to look for that patch.
