The on site warranty is them talking to you on the phone while you take apart your laptop.....seriously zfactor you do not want a alienware laptop. Your used to much better service than what alienware can give you.

but i dont care about a "tech" personally id rather replace the parts myself. most techs are a joke anyway. with dell i refused the tech everytime and they mailed me the parts directly and i would do the swap and send back the old parts. if aw would do that for me honestly id be a happy person. but it doesnt even seem like they do that most of the time?? am i correct?

Correct, the only person I recall even get parts was stone and that was only a gpu. They seem to think its ok to tell a customer how to disassemble their laptop, but not ok to for you to actual have working parts to get things running.

Yah, but you will be pretty much stuck with this laptop if you try to sell it later. I would get the 15.4 sager model.

if your not worried about tech support then go for it.
many people have been sent parts to replace by themselves. to wit: gpu's, keyboards, HDD's, and a fwe other minor items i believe.
all these people replaced the parts and returned them to AW just as you like to do...
so i see nothing wrong in you getting it if tech support is not your thing...

Yeah, but the thing is, Alienware's telling me that they don't trust (supposedly) certified techs to replace anything that's not basic. Do you really think they'd trust a customer to replace anything they don't trust those techs to? Yeah, it's pretty annoying....

Go for the glossy notebook. At least with vendors such as Xotic PC you get DOMESTIC SUPPORT from the get go and don't have to fiddle around with trying to find the roswell crew (doubt you've heard of them) and whatnot.

Alienware will only have to replace the GPU and ram from what I've seen. Anything else is too hard and they require you to send it back. The one thing that is very annoying is that Alienware will tell you that their notebooks are TOO customized to have repaired at your house (that may be true with the M15x and M17x). However, back when I had my M5550 it was just a rebranded Uniwill P72 so naturally I called them out on it and then they responded "sir if you don't want to get your computer fixed that's fine with me".

The problem was that one of my mouse buttons broke (below the touch pad) and they wouldn't repair it without me sending it AGAIN (when it was supposed to be repaired the first time I sent it in...)

Dell owns them but does not interfere with how they work unless they want to.
