I finally received my replacement m11x today and I have to say its PERFECT.

    No noisy fan
    No dim front grill light
    No dead pixels

Had an initial scare with some low 3dmark06 scores, but being a plonker I had forgotten to change the power setiings (thanks DR650SE)

Its just a shame that it took several hours of phone calls, numerous e-mails to customer services, an e-mail to [email protected], plus help from a Dell rep on these forums to get a result. Alienware / Dell make some great products, they just need to have a complete customer service overhaul.
