Hi im looking into buying an m11x and wanted to know if it was worth upgrading the ram from 2gb to 4gb? Im from the uk so things are abit more expensive and i wanted to keep costs down. The base model is £750 or $1161 so cant get cheaper than that at this point in time.
To upgrade the ram its £80 or $125. The only part i wanted to upgrade was the proc to the su7300 (£40) to keep the cost below £800
    Cheers

I would say it is worth it, those prices are ridiculously high for the ram though, but interestingly cheaper for the processor upgrade. Anyway, 4 gigs is gonna be pretty important, especially with Windows 7 and games, and you would spend at least that much to swap it out later, might as well get it from the factory all set. To be honest, I think you will see a MUCH larger performance boost from the ram rather than the CPU, so if it comes to it drop the CPU upgrade and just get the ram.

Yea so double the ram over the cpu? The su7300 doesnt seem to be a very big advantage over the su4100 from what ive read. But then some people are saying its necessary due to one of the features the 7300 has 'visualization' or something, not sure what it does really.
Ive looked at ram prices and your right its the same price so would be better to upgrade initially. If i do upgrade both thats already £120 extra, it seems alot more expensive for something still low powered if that makes sense

The SU7300 is about 5% faster than the SU4100, so it is not big. If you don't know what virtualization is chances are you won't ever need it, so I wouldn't worry about that. However, the processor can never be swapped, so you are stuck with what you get, and someday that 5% could be something you wished you had. Also, the processor upgrade in the UK is reasonably priced (40 euro right?) versus $100 in the US so it might be worth it to upgrade. It really comes down to a personnel preference.

In terms of performance I would rate them thus:
    1. Ram
    2. 7200 RPM HDD
    3. CPU

Hmm £830 with just the ram upgraded. I think ill leave the cpu as a 4100 cant see how 5% is worth the extra $125

This is just being discussed in the owners thread too. I would buy 4gb myself rather than pay dell for the 4gb upgrade. £80 for 2-4gb upgrade is disgusting. You can buy 4gb yourself for £80 and sell the 2gb

2gb is the recomended amount for mass effect 2, COD mw2 and Crysis. Min ram is 1gb for these games. Batman needs 2gb min
    Would more ram improve framerates?

Yes you will notice a gaming difference between 2 gb and 4 gb. Not so much with 4 gb and 8 gb.

At some point you will want 4 gb for the best experience (while keeping it affordable).

yeah 4gb is definately best for vista/W7 but you can easily get buy on 2gb. I am currently running 2gb on my vaio CW as I borrowed 2gb for my girlfriends laptop as she only had 1gb in. I have been meaning to buy another 2gb but so far I havent felt the need.
I use the laptop heavily to for:
    video encoding
    COD WAW
    BF BC2 beta
    DOW2
    SC FA
    LFD2
    TF2

Also keep in mind, you wont be running in dual channel mode without 2 similar (if not exact) ram modules.

true, but in reality will you even notice the difference? I certainly havent and have done plenty of benchmarking. I was expecting a big performance hit going from 2x2gb to 1x2gb and the sad thing is I havent really noticed the difference.

Memory is quite expensive in the UK at the moment and I cant justify spending £40 ($70) for another 2gb chip when the difference is negligable.

So ninja your saying you dont notice much difference at all using 2gb compared to 4gb then. The games uve listed all recommend 2gb so 4gb isnt necessary. Have you noticed any difference playing online? like loading times or lagging

Surprisingly no. I really havent noticed a difference. I am kinda dissappointed as I was expecting a big drop in performance going from 4 to 2gb.
I expect my loading times take an extra couple seconds but I get no lag or disk thrashing in games and I mostly play online.

I will go back to 4gb when I have the spare cash though as it means I can leave browser windows, apps open and still game. That would definately take me over 2gb.

Also you dont need to be a student to get the discount. They dont check! Its an extra 6% off, or you could also use quidco and get 6% cash back.
Its a shame we dont get any decent alienware discount codes in he UK :(

How can you get the discount on the website, is there an option you can select when your about to pay?
Not sure if i could get away with it though anyway, i go to college 1 day a week on day release but doubt i would count as a 'student'

Quidico charges annually for being a member so thats out the equation already :)

Sorry to resurrect this thread but thought this was the best place to post this. Would

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/OCZ-Memory-PC3-8500-1066MHz-Unbuffered/dp/B001CNR39A/ref=sr_1_48?ie=UTF8&m=A3EISXY0VA32G1&s=generic&qid=1266966511&sr=1-48

work in the M11x? Also would 2 of these enable dual channel or do you actually need to buy a 4gb kit for them to be "matched".

I ask because it seems a good price + free shipping!

(This'd be like a saving of £20 over buying the dell 4gb RAM + you could sell the 2GB that comes with it)

    hi guys,

I just got my m11x and just wondering if i can put 2 different rams in it.

Let say mine came with 4gb ram (2gb x 2gb) and i'm thinking to get 1 x 4gb ram and put into one slot and the other is the 2gb ram. Therefore in total i got 6gb ram. Will that stuff up the stability of the window?
