    Hello,

    strange pb on my m15x.
when i'm using my laptop (different uses, should be working on word, using firefox only, watching a movie, listening music, navigate in my explorer etc) sometime vista entering in sleep mode!
My laptop is completely clean, nothing installed on it except FFI.
I have tried to reinstall the system from alienrespawn but same issue.
Tried in "power saved mode" and "balanced mode" not yet in "high performance" mode.

I have disable all the line with a "sleep" reference in Alien Fusion.

that's what i have in my event logs:

first event: The Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service entered the paused state.
next event: The service temporarily stopped publishing because of a power event.

and after this i'm in sleep mode.

    Any idea?

I have that same problem as well. I started a thread on it, but no one replied. For me, it happens on average every 30 minutes. Sometimes it's not just sleep mode that kicks in, but hibernate.

Right click on the battery icon. Then go into the settings and mess with it. There is an option that lets you decide when the computer hibernates or sleeps automatically. Just turn it off.

I believe someone just posted in another thread that their computer was going to sleep or hibernating when the temperature of the CPU (or was it GPU?) was getting to 100 degrees C. Maybe you should try getting CPU/GPU temperature readings and watch to see if they correlate to the shutdown.

X32 the last one I think...
no more reboot at this time ... it's very random.
    Maybe a temp issue
    I'm waiting the next sleep

Well, when the sleep happens the temperature will therefore drop off... though it shouldn't be that quick. Does your program maybe take a graph over time, perhaps? (so you can run the program in the background and then when the sleep occurs open the program back up and look at the graph)

I've just had the same thing happen to me, not more than 20 minutes after booting with the system doing next to nothing and definitely not being warm.

X32RC1 bios and Vista Home Premium.

I've already created a support ticket about it so Alienware know it's happening to at least someone. Although mine hasn't done it at all today so I'm not sure what's going on at all.

    pateretou,

We apologize for the inconvenience, question on what it is doing....Does it happen in the middle of the process when you are typing in word? we would like to know if it happens when the system has been idle for a certain amount of time or when you are clicking to execute an application, etc. Also check if it does it when not connected to the ac adapter and running on battery only. For troubleshooting purposes, in control panel go to power options>>power saver and set it to "never" for both display and sleep mode; see if it still happens with these settings.

Thank you in advance for your patience.

    Hello guys!

    Some news from here:
just talk to the support team. It's seem the sensor for the hibernate/sleep on the motherboard is deficient.
We have tried a lot of stuffs:
    - update all drivers,
    - update bios version
    - disable all the "hibernate" and sleep mode on vista
    - running on AC power only
    - Disable all the services and programs on boot
    and many other tips.

When all the hibernate and sleep status are disabled on Vista the laptop tried to go in hibernate mode randomly and failed to hibernate (screen blink and beep error from windows)

It's appear it's a hardware issue on the motherboard.
Support team was perfect : quickly answers, quickly understanding of the issue.
My laptop now return to AW to change the motherboard!

Many thanks to the support team!

That's terrible news. So I may have a sporadic issue with spontaneous hibernation but if I send it back to Alienware and they can't reproduce it they won't change anything! :(

I also have the same problems as pateretou. Where should I start to try and resolve this problem? I am on x30 bios and vista ultimate. Should I start by phoning support? In my case, the computer sometimes goes into hibernate/sleep while I'm clicking something...

Ok, not so cool in fact.
Support just resend me the laptop without changing anything. Only reinstall Vista. But we have already this with the level 1 support.
    They didn't reproduce the issue.

Waiting my laptop but if the pb still occur I will not be so cool on phone...

Pateretou, when you say 'beep' in post 14, and the screen randomly turns on and off, do you mean the sound like when a USB device is plugged into the the laptop? I have deleted all references to sleep and hibernate, but I think I'm still getting the same problem as you.

To all suffering this problem, what is your power button set to do?

I was suffering random shutdowns while I had my m15x's "When I press the power button:" set to "Shut down".

    This setting is found under:

    Control Panel>>Hardware and Sound>>Power Options>>System Settings

I simply disabled the functions of the power button both "On battery" and "Plugged in", and just like that, no more random shutdowns.

I arrived at this conclusion when, after a couple of random shutdowns in a row, my notebook would shut off while POSTing and also randomly turn on from an off state.

It has been difficult to reproduce this problem on the phone with Roswell, but reseating the battery and/or plugging it in (can't recall which, but this was enough to blame a bad battery connection at the time) did make a reoccurring event go away when I called them once.

My suspicion is that this relates to the on-screen volume control appearing randomly, and the much more frequent dashboard volume backlight coming on as if someone had touched it. Quality Control or maybe some kind of chassis flex induced short?

Perhaps the AW factory was built on an ancient indian burial ground, and some of the notebooks they ship are cursed/possessed.

Anyway, hope something in there helps.

I've been having the random sleep issues as well on my M15x

Like others, I could be in the middle of typing, playing a game, or some other active use and the computer would go to sleep. Very frustrating.

I have observed that are two things that this seems to be related to:

    * the volume slider/control bar
    * laptop battery / plugged in state changes.

Almost universally around the time this happens, the volume slider begins to go nuts flickering.
Along with this the OSD volume will randomly pop up and the volume changes.

Given the "solution" (more of a workaround to mask the problem) of disable the power button in vista makes me wonder if there is some sort of problem with the control bar sending bogus events. It is almost as if the bar has a mind of its own. Sending either volume change events or power events causing the laptop to sleep.

Some other data points from my machine seem to indicate power state changes have an effect on both of these things.

For example, my machine can be up and running perfectly for hours, I unplug it from the AC adapter - immediately the volume control goes into a flickering state.

After that, it'll randomly sleep - plugging the AC adapter back in will not change this, (flickering/sleeping) but a full power off and reboot will usually make the system stable for a while.

It seems that the problem is worse and more frequent the longer the system has been up.

Alienware "support" (not the Roswell team, I had not yet found this forum when I called) had me uninstall the OSD software, but that was masking the problem.
Volume control flicker still occured along with random sleep.

Hay Dhoang417 I think findvikas and you miss understand my issue. I am not having sleep mode issue or hibernate while playing the games or word pad. If I leave my computer on for 8 hours doing online stuff and the computer will stay on no problem no issues.

The Issue I have is Me wanting to go to sleep mod, hibernate mod. Which dose going into both mods Just fine. It exiting out of sleep or hibernate mod after a few hours then the computer shuts off.

This is two differnt issues Findvikas seid it was the GM965. Which is the chipset that support a intergraded grapics cards M15X. Now the M17x I would guess would a PM965 for there no Intergraded grapics card on it.

The Main issue now sleep mode. hybrid sleep mode. hibernate

Going into sleep mode is fine. Even with the external mouse or keyboard. If I hit the mouse it will exit out of sleep mode. 95% of the time that what I want. Basicly if someone calls me and need to do a order engraving. I want to exit out of sleep mode asap.

If it a hour or longer it like playing Poker. Now exiting sleep mode 15% to 20% of the time after a few hours and 1 Min Loaded up the computer shut off it like hitting the power button or a hard reboot. I can be in login mode with out entering windows. Or log in and walk away with no programs on. When I get back the computer is off.

So it like please wait I have to wait untel my computer Loads up.

Now here the list of what it dose.

1 The computer turns off Automaticly and when you reboot you get the message Your computer did not turn off right do you want to restart windows normaly.
2 The computer turns off automaticly and when you reboot windows starts up normal.
3 Before you hit login screen it shuts off.

    Ok things that I tried
1 I check the Problem report Solutions. Nothing.
2 Ok disabled everything on msconfig as in startup and everything but MSMirosoft Services.
    3 Differnt Ram 2x 4gb of DDR2 5300 667mhz. 2x 512mb ddr2 5300 667mhz
4 Windows Vista on secondary hard drive trouble shooting.
    5 tried differnt Bluetooth
items. Internal, Belkin both from alienware and Logitech. Disabled them all. Use laptop keyboard mouse. Same error.
6 Tried it with 1 Hard drive.
7 On a Nexus laptop cooler (it hardly feels warm kinda useless for this laptop)
8 Cleaned the GPUs and CPU Fans.
9 Closed lid or start menu sleep mode.
10 Just on battery power or Power supply.
11 Made sure nothing was Loaded but windows Applications.
    12 Change Bios
13 can not reach internal cmos battery.
    14 Tried differnt geforce drivers
    15 Tried single Geforce 8600.
16 Stealth Mode. basicly cpu and gpus drop 50% in power useage.
17 I tried Hibernate mode and still get shut off. After a hour or more.

This problem seems to progress over time.
The computer running games temps are cpu are 42c gpu are 59c and 66c.
