I am experiencing strange problems with my m15x when playing Blue Ray DVDs.
Everything works fine as long as I use the OnBoard GFX, however with the 8800 GTX I cannot see the movie.
When I launch the movie with the nVidia Graphics, the color scheme switches to Vista basic (???, strange enough). Then the DVD starts playing (black screen) and about 1 sec later, PowerDVD stops operating, i.e. application disappears.![]()
With the OnBoard GFX everything is ok.
I have NO problems playing normal DVDs in BOTH GFX mode.
Here is my config related to this issue:
Vista Ultimate 32bit
4GB RAM
Cyberlink's PowerDVD 8 as main DVD Player
Mat****a BD-RE UJ-220 Blue Ray R/W Drive.
The nVidia Display Driver is v175.63.
Anybody else with this problem?![]()
I have already tried to find a new Firmware for the DVD-Drive, but no success.

get the service pack 1 for vista, try using another blu ray software player?
-
Vista SP1 is already installed.
Which other SW-Player would you recommend?
BTW, I found this Driver Update and that Firmware Update for the UJ-220.
Does anybody know if it is safe to use with the Alienware OEM DVD-Drive? .... And most important: Is it likely the updates will solve my issues? ... And also, how do I identify the current Firmware version of my drive?

i think if you have nero installed you should be able to find out the firmware of your drive....and nero 8 comes with blu ray support so you cant try that as an alternate player for your movies

Hi there,
I had the same issues at first, I was getting a completely black screen but I could hear the audio...
I fixed it by changing one of the settings in the configuration of Power DVD, I think it was 'Video Always on Top'...
I had another problem when I first got the laptop, it wouldn't recognise the BluRay disc at all and said it was an unsupported format.
Turned out my laptop had the wrong version of Power DVD pre-installed, I contacted Alienware support and they sent me the BD version which supports BluRay discs.
All sorted now...
I hope this helps.
PS - First post! w00t!

note-
If anyone finds a working firmware update-from Alienware (or elsewhere) zip it and attach the file here in a thread reply.
Also my BD-RE drive is using Microsoft driver 6.0.6001.18000 dated 06/21/2006- anyone got a newer driver they want to share?
Anyone have anymore releases to add to the non-playable list?( I personally do not want to buy a $30 BD disc I cant play)
I suggest powerdvd ultra users submit support ticket to Cyberlink. The more users who do, the faster they will resolve this bug.Attached Files:

This will not work. Already tried. NEC firmware is for the UJ-220B and installer will not run on the UJ-220, the Vaio driver is an update for Vaio burning software and does not affect UJ-220, or even update the driver for it.
