I tried out the new 197.16 drivers from Nvidia yesterday and they BSOD before even finishing the installation. I have an Alienware m15x and wonder if andyone else is having this problem. I uninstalled the old (186.81) drivers prior also.

Your link was posted to the 195 and 186 drivers released back in september and december. Im talking about 197, like stated in the title. released March 29, 2010. nice try though.
-
The 190 series of drivers don't really work well with the area 51 m15x, since these drivers don't support binary gfx.
I would recommend staying put with 186.82. -
Thanks, I used those form laptop2go drivers, they worked well.
-
So no one has any news on the 197 drivers?
-
has no one else tried these?
-
Well this sucks, I guess I have no choice but to stick with dell drivers. Damn exclusive motherboards.
-
I think the main problem was with binarygraphics. I'm glad I don't have it with my M17, as it was more of a hassle than it was worth. I bought my m15x (RIP) for gaming, not traveling, so I never used the intel graphics, and at the end of it's life I was going through the driver support problems like these with nvidia.
-
I use the Binary Graphics on my laptop all the time. By not using my 9800m GT all the time, it prolongs the life of my videocard, thus it doesn't reach extreme temperatures and only gets that hot when I'm gaming.

So I tried the 2nd time to reinstall driver and the story were the same. But, the 3rd time I tried do it on battery (without AC adapter), so it successfully installed. And booted with adapter correctly. But my SLI enabled issue want's gone (it' run normally on battery, but i put adapter back -> driver crashes (any driver 17x.xx crashes too) and then screen freezes and then goes blue screen, if it goes...D
But it's not the end. Yesterday when I was at work, my m1730 fans was working noisier than usually, but I supposed it's ok. When i get to home, after 2 hour working (flash, dreamweaver and other stuff), my fans really go crazy and where working at 3500+ rpm (HWmonitor) and both GPU temps where 90 degrees and not changing... only 90 degrees no +-1. I supposed it's mby some bug, so the fans are working so fast...... But when the hour passed fans start running very noisy (so i open my HWmonitor and saw there that the GPU temps are 104-106 degrees !!! it's really wow.. I don't know why it become so crazy.. after 2 minutes computer shutdown automaticaly when i tried to power up it, the fans worked at the same speed in bios... i tried to reset bios settings but it didn't help...
Now it isn't working at all. After I power on it... 15-20 seconds and it's turns off. Chips are cold, but gpu fans run at 100%. So today i needed to go to warranty center for an replacement and it takes about a week... :/ -
P.S. I have had before 186.81 too and put new 197.16 drivers.
-
I've tried a bunch of drivers and got to 186.91 only to revert back to the default drivers off of Alienwares website. Because if you have a blu-ray player like myself, it seems to be th only graphics driver for the 9800m GT to actually work. But whatever.... I got all my games to work finally and Blu Ray looks good, so I'll just use these.

well, this thread died. only one person gave ACTUAL advice/knowledge on my question. everyone else just blathered along.
-
No one has tried 19*.** on their Area-51 M15x it just doesn't work... What more do you want? Get a new PC to run those more up to date drivers.
-
I mean has anyone tried them? has anyone heard anything more about them. duhhhhhhh.
-
They don't work, I mean seriously if you want them to work so badly I suggest you get a new videocard like a 260 or a 280 or something, and maybe then it'll work.
-
All we can do is stick to 186.xx and try to get in contact with nvidia and dell/alienware... -
I have the newest NVIDIA drivers isstalled that were released on 29 Mar on my Area 51 M17x 9800m gt SLI machine. The drivers work great, not a single problem (esp since I fixed the one card
)
-
i hope that owners of other laptops stop hijacking this thread! -
LEave USMC alone he has the same videocard as we do 980m GT, he's just trying to help out.
-
the thing is: someone makes a thread about nvidia driver problems with the m15x and 80% of the posts are from people with other notebooks of cause without problems, so the thread becomes senseless -
I don't think anything works or help, I've tied the drivers that other have claimed to work on my system, and they do work, however they only work for gaming. As soon as I switch to playing or running my Blu Ray Movies we have problems again all of a sudden. I'm done with my m15x. I'm just going to use the programs I have on it and that's it. I won't even be playing FPS games on this system, as I will be doing that on my m17x.
-
......um negative, the driver flashers your card not your laptop. Your 9800m gt is the same as one of my two. So yes it is relevant, as the 9800m gt can still run the newest driver, proved by my machine.
Now if I said I had a new m15x w a 260 than you would have an argument.
And you shouldn't be a jerk when someone is trying to help and let you know the driver is good. Cause you wont Hey any further help. -
I believe that the problem stems from the fact that the area 51 m15x supports binary gfx ( switchable graphics cards ) which are not supported by the latest Nvidia mobile drivers ( versions 190 and up )
So even if the area 51 m17x's 9800m gt/8800m gtx works with the newest drivers, it won't necessarily work with the area 51 m15x's.
Hope this clarifies everything. The driver I use for mine is 186.82, by the way. -
Hmm is there a option to force in bios for the graphic chip to use the discrete (the 3D graphic card). Then install the driver?
It seemed to work for the Mx11, if you wanted to use the latest driver , you have to select discrete option to disable the 2D graphic card.
