Well I am a little baffled today when I went to configure an m15x. I do this every few days to see if any components have come down in price.
2 weeks ago AW dropped the price of the 9800m gt to +250 dollars from the stock video card, ati 3870. Before this the price was +350 dollars.
I went to AW site today to config a new m15x to find they have raised the price of the 9800m gt back up to +350 dollars?? This is an outdated card with the 200 series now out and they decided to raise the cost? Are they just trying to milk the m15x as much as they can before pulling it for the all powerful line of laptops? I have never seen a company raise their prices on outdated hardware after lowering it.
Oh and first postI am a regular reader on the boards but I finally decided to go ahead and register haha.

Its Alienware! It is their duty to make components upgrades overpriced!
However the upgrade to 1200p is really inexpensive... 100$ -
While I agree they tend to overprice components this one struck me as very odd. They have been lowering the costs of their line of laptops, even removing one (m17x), only to make room for a new line of laptops in 8 days. Why on earth would they be raising the prices on laptops they just discounted. It seems so silly.
-
Alienwares are always overpriced. Go get a sager np8662. It's the best bang for buck.
-
Sure, but they have to make money somewhere. By lowering prices on models, they entice more consumers to look at their products. So, in order to try to make up for some of the difference in price drops of the base models, they raise the prices of the components. Alienware is very smart, because if you start up with a lower price, psychologically you are thinking you can upgrade more components. In the end, you are more likely to spend more on a computer than you would if the base price were high to start with. That's my take on it.
-
Agreed, in some respect. I would be drawn to cheaper base configurations too, even with higher priced components because I figure I'll just upgrade them myself for less, at the same time most companies price upgrades for customizable computers slightly under pretty competitive pricing to therefore ensure they collect a wide range consumers, whether they're the price conscious or DIY minded consumer. Sometimes working the other way around, higher base prices, wins over some shoppers, since all the upgrades appear dirt cheap.

very very true
-
It's always a pleasure to se Alienware's biggest fan. Again!
-
The best part of that comment coming from him is that he is using an Apple lol, talk about overpriced .
-
I was agreeing with him to some extend until you mentioned that
-
lol very very true when you could run that Mac on a sager ... if there were drivers...O wait because Apple is more over priced and limiting then AW
All you get told by them is NO
lol Commies -
But I'd rather pay the bucks to get the absolute best bang.
-
lol
sager doesn't get 5 hours of battery or illuminated keyboard .
designs cost/exclusive's cost -
Well now... It seems it's price went up again... to 400$. :l
-
What the hell is going on? The 9800m gt was +450 when it was the best video card in the market.. Don't play stupid with me alienware... We are on to you..
-
Maybe it is some problem with the supply of GPUs. In alienware germany, m15x and m17x shipping date were stated as june 19 when 9800 GT is selected, until today afternoon. Now there are suddenly no more delays and the estimated delivery date is June 5! The prices in alienware.de are going crazy at the moment and changing every minute or so.
Looking fwd for a price drop from 257 Euro for 9800 GT and grab an m17x !!
-
Maybe AW is finally offering the m280 with their m15x (thanks to JDELUNA's efforts and none in-house
), and in all the excitement they changed the price on the website before changing the options...
I know, yeah right. However, they are slow, sometimes beyond slow, to change their website. They still show white as an option in AlienFX, when I don't think any US buyers' notebook has shipped with that option in some time. They also continue to show unboxing videos that evidence a mousepad new buyers will not get. -
dude its 2400 for 9800m gt SLI on m17x
-
that's amazing... I think I'd buy five m280s, and toss 'em in the trash when they burst into flames.
-
huh?
why would they burst into flames and its 2400 stock except the GPU upgrade not just the upgrade -
Oh, my bad. Thought you meant $2400 for the two 9800m upgrade! Big diff.
-
hmm... it is 1557 Euros for m17x with 9800 GT, not SLI. and everything else base config. And they no longer offer WUXGA+ resolution - only 1440 x 900. Also no ripley / skullcap choice; dont know if they used to give that option earlier though.
-
Once ASUS G51 comes up it may be a different story.
-
we are already discussing stories on "what when AllPowerful comes up?"
-
May or may not, the NP8662 is fairly inexpensive all things considered, and unlike the Asus it doesn't look like a Transformer's toy.
-
I don't know if the supplies of this card are diminishing, or if it's just a way to make more money from upgraders.
When I was looking into getting a second 7950 GTX for my M9750, A.W. quoted me $386. A month later when I decided to get it, the "new" price was $477.
I ended up getting the card but felt a little stung. -
I still think the best bang for your buck is the new gateway p-7807u, its got the 9800m, 4 gigs ddr3, a p8600, and a 7200 rpm drive, all for just over 1,000 dollars. A similar rig anywhere else would cost you 1500+. Tha being said I did opt for the alienware m15x as I just liked it more.
m15x 9800m gt price increase!?
