I've had my m15x since 3/08 and my hinge is pulling apart, but not completely broken (yet).

I've been trying to find out if anyone has had their hinge repaired and then opened it up to see what they actually did. I've only come across 3 or so posts where people have commented on getting their m15x's back and saying everything "appears" to be fixed, but what did they really do? Tighten it back up? Replace the flimsy plastic with better parts? Any insight?

well i just got it back. it doesnt creak anymore when i got it. im praying it last me forever now tho. They only fix the hinge somehow. I remember every little detail about my old case so i can confirm they kept the old case on. they most probably reinforced the hinge when they released skull cap because i dont think we have a complaint about the hinge opening up from skull cap users yet.

Thanks Exiled, I guess its not like I have much of a choice anyway. I sent an email to [email protected] with my situation and pictures, but that was 5 days ago with no response, I guess I will have to call the number. I'm guessing that the holidays possibly have them busy. *shrug*

Does anyone take their hard drives out before they send them in for repair?

i took my hard drive out and the battery out when i sent it in. They told me there was a 50% chance of it get wiped so i told them i would be taking out the hard drive. they said it was ok so theres no problems. I just checked the screws they put in too. Its the original screws. I would know since i kind of marked them. The screws were nice and tight when it got back to me so thats a positive sign. Basically they keep everything the same and probably just change something inside the hinge.

The one thing you should look out for is that once you recieve it back shake the comp and bit and look around since i found a piece of plastic inside the computer.

i emailed them too but they dont really respond now so i just decided to call them. It is a lot faster. The call is only around 20 minutes long and around 20 minutes later you will get your shipping label.

On mine, they replaced the whole top of the system. In addition to the hinge issue the paint was wearing off around all the top corners. Don't know why because I was putting it in its sleeve before taking it anywhere.

According to Roswell they are replacing defective hinges with reinforced ones when you send it in.

If they are using new hinges they should try using them on the new m15x's that they send out. Too many are still creaking and breaking.

when did they start replacing them? My system went in for some other repairs back in august and it still creaks (though no seperating that I can see) it is a skull cap. Should I send it in? Would the creaking stop? Its pretty annoying and worries me for its future

my right hinge was making cracking and creaking sounds whenever i opened it back when mine popped. Once it came back to me it doesnt make a noise now. Im guessing depending on how much time you have you could send it in. But why fix something that isnt broken :/.

Would there be further problems if i dont send my m15x for repairs? The shipping costs are huge from India to Ireland and back - nearly 350$ either way!

arcade16, which repair center did you send it to? UK or US?

Konig, what happened to your m15x? I could understand your hesitation to send it over because of the shipping costs..

your not to late I haven't sent it. Well when I needed repairs last it took two weeks. I was really picky with my last system (dell) and when under warranty I had anything that was or could be a problem fixed. Techs were amazed at how nice my systems were between my maintenance and theirs

@cha - Same old- broken hinge. I thought of not sending it, and keeping it open 24/7 at home, but yesterday it opened up some more while playing COD5. Will be sending it back today hopefully (lots of paperwork - have to write letters to the Commissioner of Customs, get a GR Waiver from a bank and a chartered engineer's certificate saying that the laptop is broken and cannot be repaired in India)...Will also extend my warranty to 3 years in March :(

Wow sending it back from India requires that much paperwork Konig?

You were the one inquiring about Gmask right? Didn't you get it wrapped, as there are Gmask branches in India? Or was the wrap unable to hold it in place? I'm also curious when you received your m15x. I've had mine since July, got it wrapped this November. So far, still without problems

No I didnt get a chance to get it wrapped, and when I decided to go there, it broke that very day!! my SLS is very bad! (S*** Luck Syndrome - I came up with it, sad I know ;) )
I ordered my m15x in May, got it on the 13rd of June (Friday the 13th, I'll add). There is a GMask in Mumbai, but its on the other side of town for me. Anyway, once I get the new one back, I'll get the wrapping done immediately and leave it open permanently at home.

Oh, sorry to hear about your bad luck man :(

Let's hope that you get good repair service from Alienware. I've browsed through the forums and saw that some repairs have gone bad. I can't imagine sending it back for repairs a second time should things go bad. The shipping cost is bad enough, and you even have to deal with the waiting game again..
