I just got my m15x about 3 weeks ago and i have no problems getting online at my house or a friends wireless router but for some reason whenever i try to connect to my schools router it will connect but i still wont have internet only after a million tries of restarting the wifi card and reseting the IP adress will i sometimes get it to work. I all rdy tried getting new drivers my computer says i am up to date. I know its not a problem with my schools router because my friend can get connected no problem on his laptop

    So can anyone help me?

i'd imagine it could be the OS, our school network will not support XP home or Vista Basic. There could also be a proxy on the network, that your friend has but you don't.

Read on Vista networking and you will see that routers often reject Vista clients.

I know that a lot of companies (mine included) did not go the Vista route and they are still in XP OS on their server. If you are running Vista sorry wont work on the XP server, which has been more reliable and less headache for the IT guys. When W7 comes then will see some change.

There is no such thing as XP, Linux, Vista router. There are routers more flexible than others.

For example, Vista has tons of features that many routers do not support. I get booted off networks because of the Vista power saver on my Wi-Fi :).

I say your school has MAC filtering. I have never heard of a router rejecting a Vista client, and if there is such a thing, the method of getting around it must be extremely easy.

...so if you haven't heard off it...it does not exist. Gotcha! Very professional answer and attitude. I get booted all the time and my xp laptop does not.

I would talk to your school's IT people. I go to Ringling and before this year their wireless was set up mostly for macs so that you had to go in through airport and do all this stuff to "talk" to the network and it had a similar process for windows. This year it was removed (it had connection problems because of it).

Your IT department can probably tell you if it will work and give you instructions on how to connect.

Happens at my school too, it could possibly be a proxy, or the fact that your school runs on Novell.

Did you join your vista computer to a domain? I run our domain and while i have some GPOs here and there, nothing is really draconian or anything.

I've tried 10 Desktops and 3 laptops (mine has a separate vista hard drive for me to test with) and upon reformat DHCP works just fine. Join our corporate domain. Can NOT pick up DHCP addresses from any router in our environment (which is only at 2 branches), nor from the NUMEROUS windows 2003 DHCP services on my many branch servers. NOR... once i get home, i cant receive em as well from my Linksys router or the netgear router i have installed at my parents' house. At one time i fixed it (uninstalled the vista update that "broke" logitech mice and some other things, there is also a broadcast flag registry key i changed. I have a rant about it on tech net.

SO what happened? another windows vista update broke it, and now even with a system restore, it didn't fix it anymore. Hell, i haven't even TRIED the vista hard drive on my laptop since July. and yes i had SP1 on ALL machines. I'm sure its something with my GPO or settings, but i cant see how or what. i ran the updates on the server to allow for vista gpo extensions, but NO HELPY!!! on a side rant about stupid vista, my sli desktop had been working great on ultimate64, but about 4 months ago my mic stopped working entirely on ventrilo and in-game. why? i have no idea. but it was after updates. i didn't notice it right away but have tried most of the new builds of vent, along with audio drivers galore. /endrant

Not sure exactly how your schools network is setup but if its anything like mine I can point out how ours works. The authentication is the same as our school username/password and if you just try to connect to the network it will let you connect but not give you internet. In my case, all that has to be done is a Wireless network created with the particular SSID, security type changed to 802.1x, then enter settings under authentication method, then settings under select authentication method to uncheck the use of the computers username and password. Then when you attempt to connect to the network, it asks for the username/password- then everything works fine.

Seemed like a hassle to me but I actually had to ask for help from one of the campus Tech guys, should be somebody like that at your school if you still have problems.

***Also, if you do use a school Username/Password they can expire which again the oncampus tech should be able to remedy

maybe the router has given out it's limit of ip's when you try to connect...I used to work in a remote mining camp, it was near impossible to get an ip from the wireless router during peak times...depending on how the router is configured there is probably only a set number of ip adress's available at any given time...
