Well, I decided to buy a new monitor the other day, since I started to program and script a lot lately, and a 15.4" is just getting too small.

So I bought a 21.5" Acer H223HQ monitor with full HD, DVI (HDCP) and VGA.

Anyway, I attached the monitor to my m15x with a hdmi-hdmi cable (also tried hdmi-dvi) and everything's working fine. Except...it's all asdf-ed up. Imagine a picture with a lot of grain and a "4d"-ish (like 4d cinemas, when you're not wearing your glasses!) coloured image. It's kind of hard to explain, so I'll just attach some photos.

Oh, and... I know that the monitor works perfect, as I've tested it on other computers, both the VGA, DVI and HDMI port.

And sorry for the picture quality - it's dark here and my camera is dead, so I had to use my phone. I'll get new pics and/or a video if you want.

    So...anyone know whats wrong? :D

It might only be giving 8 bit or 16 bit colors to the monitor.
Go to properties>settings, click on monitor 2 and set it to 32bit if it isn't already.

I tried that, 32 bit was default. I tried to set it to 16 and 8 bit, but neither worked. I also tried different resolutions, didn't work either. I also tried changing the colour output from RGB to Ycycacpapcap-something, and that did not work either, in fact, it just got grainier.

check your nvidia settings for the output, see if you can change the output mode or something...

also, look at your displays information dialogs and config dialogs. be sure you're using sync and resolution settings it can handle.

for example, if it can only handle 30hz, and you're pumping 60hz at it, you'd end up with what you did.

check the nvidia control panel, see what mode it is in... you should do clone mode and just play around with the settings if you cant get it to work

Well, I can only select 50hz and 60hz at 1920x1080, and neither of them fixed it. I've also tried other resolution, such as, 1024x768, and it gave me more options, but they did not work either. (Note, it's a 60hz monitor.)

    Believe me, I've tried it.

I'm starting to wonder if it could have anything to do with Windows XP? Or maybe the HDMI port is broken?

Has anyone else tried using HDMI with anything else than a projector? (I saw a topic on this forum with WoW...)

Edit: Maybe bad graphics drivers, I'll try changing them once I get home from school.

is the external listed as a generic monitor or listed as the ACER with the brands drivers installed for it?

Well, I got a CD with some drivers on, but they don't work AT ALL. When I launch the program it wants me to "Check for updates." I click it, and I'm sent to a website that says, "You have the most recent version." The program, however, still wants me to check for updates, and I can't click anything else.

Anyway, the monitor is listed as ACER H223HQ, in the NVidia control panel (that's without drivers installed.)

I'm currently trying to install newer drivers, which hopefully works. (This is the one I am downloading right now: http://laptopvideo2go.com/drivers/xp/185.20 )

    Edit: Didn't work.

Edit2: Maybe the HDMI port is broken? Should I try opening the laptop and see if there is a loose wire or so?

Okay, I sent an email to the Roswell crew. We're currently trying to see if we can find the issue, so far no luck. I'll keep you updated.

if you included the same pics as you did here and described all the same, you should be ok for a resolution. if you did not - you may want to direct them to this posting and let them read it for further info.

I know it is bad to bump old threads, however, I promised I would post once I had a solution or got it fixed...and I did.

After talking with Alienware Support for quite a while, we decided to send the machine back for repairs. I got it back yesterday, and it has been working like a dream. So I am guessing it was just a dead/broken HDMI port.
