Hey guys, will you pull out the battery pack from the machine if you are using AC?
-
-
Erm, no, what would be the point?
-
what u mean? it wont do any damage to it thought
-
coz many people said that keeping the battery connected to AC will damage it
-
they are wrong keeping the battery in is safer than taking the battery out and accidentally unplugging it. these new batteries are fine being plug in all of the time.
-
Do you have a source? I've allways been told that it's better to take it out as it will decrease the constant load on your battery.
"Leaving a battery in a laptop while using an electrical outlet for long periods of time will keep the battery in a constant state of charging up and that will reduce the life cycle of the battery. " http://mobileoffice.about.com/od/usingyourlaptop/f/laptopbattery.htm -
i am worrying about this coz my older HP laptop's battery is dead within 1 year inside the laptop.
-
if you arent moving the m15x then leave the battery out
also it should keep your notebook cooler -
The answer is: YES and NO, it depends on the situation.
Having a battery fully charged and the laptop plugged in is not harmful, because as soon as the charge level reaches 100% the battery stops receiving charging energy and this energy is bypassed directly to the power supply system of the laptop.
However there's a disadvantage in keeping the battery in its socket when the laptop is plugged in, but only if it's currently suffering from excessive heating caused by the laptop hardware.
So:
*
In a normal usage, if the laptop doesn't get to hot (CPU and Hard Disk around 40ºC) the battery should remain in the laptop socket;
*
In an intensive usage which leads to a large amount of heat produced (i.e. Games) the battery should be removed from the socket in order to prevent unwanted heating.
The heat, among the fact that it has 100% of charge, is the great enemy of the lithium battery and not the plug, as many might think so. -
Mos Li+ battery packs have overcharge protedction circuits so leaving the battery in shoudln''t hurt it. Also, keep in mind that the number of charge/discharge cycles that a battery receives has a far greater effect on battery life than keeping the battery charged all of the time.
-
Maybe newer batteries have some sort of overcharge protection as is previously mentioned. However, if you still have concerns, be sure to discharge the battery to at least 50% every 2 weeks or so (even once a month is sufficient). Frequent charge/discharge cycles will keep the battery well conditioned. My battery stopped retaining its charge very soon because it was plugged in most of the time.
-
Do you have a source on this information? From my understanding at 100% charge that is when you should take out the battery as even though it's plugged in, it's still being put under some load and reducing it's battery life.

here is one source.

will try to look for more. it really is a mixxed bag of information, but from my experience i see no effect of keeping the battery attached. so in the end its up to you if you want to attach it or not. -
Thanks +rep

So, it ends up that there is possible that I can unplug the battery to avoid overheat from other components of the computer. So, I better unplug the battery coz I'm gaming a lot and overclocking my GPU too!
It is highly possible that my old HP battery is killed by the heat coz my old laptop really is a micro-heater. -
I see someone is using battery care
hehehe
But yeah, everything he said is right. Although i wouldn't REALLY recommend taking out the battery even when gaming on AC, cuz if it gets disconnected (my AC adapter slides out all the time, since it does't really anchor at all :s) it'll screw things up just cutting the power like that all at once, so you're better off just keeping the damn battery in. And if you don't believe him (and me) the makers of the best battery maintenance app "Battery Care" will tell you the same
here's the link to the app :

and here's the link to the Info provided on their site:

That outta do it

As explained on the battery care site, it's not actually retaining the charge less ( lithium batteries are not affected by this) but rather your battery meter isn't properly representing the actual battery life remaining, so its more of a calibration issue. using battery care, it is set to give you a reminder every 30 cycles to fully discharge and charge yoru battery to maintain the accuracy of your battery life meter.

thanks for catching this, meant to link this page but some how got mixed up.
-
Users manual for M15x clearly states that the battery shall always be kept in its socket.
-
Is it possible that dell wants us to kill our battery sooner so they can sell us a spare one sooner too?XP
-
to me it more dangerous to have it plug in with no battery, cause if you accidentally disconnect the plug, you can cause great harm to your laptop. i rather have a dead battery than a dead laptop. so now it up to you to decide, you have been shown all the facts.

That's true.
