I started a new thread to prevent hijacking the m17 thread and to see if anyone could spot a pattern in my computer's strange behaviour. (See sig for my laptop spec), I should say that the laptop was fine for the first few months I had it, but I have now been living with this problem for about 4 months, following a reformat. It didn't affect me too much before MW2 was released.
What works fine :
-Windows Vista 64 ultimate, and now Win 7 64 ultimate. There is no strange behaviour here, no crashes in windows,
-dcp latency spikes yellow due to wireless otherwise it idles at green.
-Playback of video files, streaming, all windows tasks, integrated and external, all fine
-Alienfx and command centre
-Team Fortress 2 runs with no issues or crashes
Whats going wrong :
-slight noise on the sound output sometimes, like a subtle buzzing interacting with what i'm doing.
-Modern warfare 2 and WoW do a hard lockup of the system every couple of hours, sometimes sooner.
-CoD4 client crashes within about 5 minutes.
-Fallen Earth client crashes in the same place every time I trigger a particular mission/interaction. Also whenever I login to fallen earth my alienfx crashes and lights go off.
-I tried to update to the 195.62 forceware 64 bit win 7 and always get an error 43 from device manager, nvidia controls fail to load and 3d apps wont run. I installed the drivers several times, using safe mode, driversweeper, these drivers just will not stick. Sometimes these drivers triggered a bluescreen crash on loading windows.
What I tried :
-Many reformats, installed all the recommended drivers from the alienware guide and information from this forum.
-I have scanned for virus etc but I do not run antivirus software or invasive firewalls.
-After reformats I install the bare minimum to operate the computer and play a game
-thermofan polls during crashes show gpu temperate at high 80's
-I tried x32 and am now using x36 bios
So my question is does anything leap out at you?
-
I guess we are talking about the old m15x.
Well, I would try looking at both the GPU fan and CPU fan and see if there is no dust clogs on the radiators, which cause the CPU to go to high temps -
Heat issues do sound like a possible cause but I had an Alienware support representative monitor my temps remotely during heavy loads and said they looked fine.
-
well,
I would still double check since you are having an desktop CPU on your machine. Its just about 5-6 screws to unscrew and then youll be able to see if its clogged or not
PS. I dont trust these support reps -
run furmark or OCCT and check
use HWmonitor to check
-
I am using 186.xx drivers and have no graphics problems. I do have that buzzing/crackling audio issue, though it isn't audible unless you are listening hard.
EDIT: Also in Windows 7 x64 -
nvm, I misread his signature
m15x behaving very strangely
