So, as the title says I am unable to move/copy/replace files in vista. Sometimes the window calculating the time of transfer freezes (so i have to close it down using task manager and it basically crashes explorer),

other times especially while replacing files I drag the files to the new folder or use ctrl+c and ctrl+v in the new folder and it asks me if i want to replace the files (or it doesnt even ask me) and then nothing happens...it doesnt even initiate transfer/copying and the system doesnt even start to work.

I am using Vista 32bit, got nod32 as AV and otherthan that...daemon tools..hmm nothing except programs that the m15x came with.

Does anyone have any ideas or have experienced the same problem?

definitely Vista problem... or in better words sounds like a virus activity or corrupt installation. Try Safe mode and see if anything changes...

make sure you are an administrator type account. Then

    you can try this:

    http://www.computerperformance.co.uk/vista/vista_administrator_activate.htm

But it also may be a permissions issue. In that case:

    1:Right click a file -> properties

    2:security tab

    3:click advanced

    4:Owner tab

    5:click edit

    6:click other users and groups

    7:click advanced

    8:Find now

9:All the way at the bottom double click users

10:OK out of all these windows. (At the third ok you should get and message saying you have just taken ownership of this object hit OK)

11:after that open up properties on the file again and go the the security tab. You should be able to select users from the list.

12:select users and then click edit. Then click full control. Then ok

Let me know if this works.

Variations of this include skipping step 4 (drastic change),doing this to c:\ drive and skipping step 4, In step 12 select users, then advanced, then select users, then edit, the select users and edit again and then click full control. Also: the above link is to one of my fav vista hacks :D

Thank you all for your tips, i have tried all of them. :)

My UAC is disabled, and my Vista installation was last updated yesterday.

I am right now scanning for a virus with Nod32, will see how that turns out.

What i have discovered so far is that if I follow the steps to activate the hidden administrator account and log on as administrator i have no problem moving/copying/replacing files. But the problem still continues while i am on my normal account.

I tried giving full ownership to my normal account, and i think i did it but it refused to give me ownership of a few folders which were if i remember correctly, some boot directories, the windows directory and program files directory.

I have checked and I am running exactly the same programs on both my administrator and user account account. (I went into task manager->processes and closed down all programs that werent running on the administrator account).

It is very weird, when i try and move files on my normal user account it starts calculating the time, shows me a number (exactly the same as on the administrator account) but then it freezes when it "tries" to show me the three options if i want to "copy and replace", "copy and not replace" or "dont copy". While when i am on the administrator account Vista has no problem showing me this screen.
