Does anyone know if you can run the m15x in a dual monitor configuration using the HDMI output?

    ie.
    M15x = Monitor 1
    M15x HDMI Out = Monitor 2

Or is it only possible to send the monitor 1 output through the HDMI out?

If I can't run this laptop in dual monitor mode, that is an issue.

Of coz u can. And I assume u know by heart u can only do HDMI out, and no input to your laptop screen at all. Maybe all you need is HDMI-to-DVI converter cable which is like 10 buck online.

Ok, but can you do dual monitors with the

    1) vga out
    2) hdmi out

I want to put the laptop under the desk with the lid closed so I can't use the actual lcd screen as one monitor.

    Thanks...

Does anyone know what the maximum output resolution is over the m15x's HDMI port? I was thinking of getting a 30" Dell monitor when the m17x is out and wondered if it will actually be able to drive it at full resolution.

The connection doesn't matter, the ability to run dualview is software related, which nVidia has provided in their forceware drivers for ages. You will need a monitor that accepts HDMI intput however, or an HDMI to DVI adapter.

    scothershman:
The M15x doesn't have a VGA out port, only HDMI. As for running the external monitor while your laptop lid is closed, you would have to disable hibernation mode on your laptop. Even then, the LCD shuts off when you close the lid, which probably will affect your secondary monitor either in dualview or cloneview mode.

    didroe:
Those Dell 30" monitors support WQXGA (2560x1600) resolution, therefore you will need HDMI v1.3 to support such (ridiculously) high resolutions. It would be safe to bet that AW would provide the driver updates for their HDMI port for all future firmware revions of the HDMI spec. So HDMI cables won't be your bottleneck, it will be the GPU and software. The M15x's GPU is more than capable of WQXGA resolutions and nVidia is known for good software support, but if the M15x ships with HDMI v1.2 or less, then you will only be able to output WUXGA (1920x1200) without a driver update. At this time, it does not appear that anyone knows which HDMI version the M15x ships with, but I think it would be safe to assume it is 1.3. Alienware also claims audio transfer via HDMI, but you have to enable it through some no-so-obvious software settings.

To clarify you can't run 2 External LCDs with this laptop unless HDMI can somehow split 2 ways.

So did you get this working? As i asked Alienware see below..

    Thank you for contacting Alienware.

The port is an HDMI 1.2 connector, and it will not allow a dual monitor. As per the resolution, this depends entirely on the video card and the monitor, the GPU supports resolutions in that neighborhood so most likely the limitation would reside in the external monitor.

Not sure if they understood me though, ie using the laptop screen and a monitor... any ideas?

    pretty much.

is there one of those dual-head thingers for DVI-D? 'cause I seem to recall a VGA device that would mesh two displays of equal resolution, making a double-wide display... (eg 1024x768 + 1024x768 = 2048x768) and the computer would be none-the-wiser.

the graphics chipset would be under a heavier load because of the extra real-estate, but other than that...

the actual size of the monitor doesn't really matter, it's resolution is far more important.

I'm using spanning with a 24" Dell LCD through my HDMI. My desktop is on the m15x and it is extended onto the 24". Works great.

I run my desktop on a 32 inch sharp 1080p Aquos display. I have plugged my m15x into it and it works fine.

I was thinking about buying a 30 inch LCD before I bought this display but I figured it was better to get a TV that, while not capable of 2560x1600 resolutions and such, would allow me to hook up all my consoles, watch HD tv, watch movies, play on my desktop, etc all on the same screen and for a lower price.

For some reason the Sharp can run 1600x1200 on DVI but not when using an HDMI hookup.. found that kind of strange.
