I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on an Alienware m17, but have been reading horror stories of the m15's hinge cracking issue. Have m17 owners also experienced this defect? It appears as though both models have similar hinge designs...

Any advice is appreciated in helping me make my decision here...

No hinge issues for the M17/Whitebook, its chassis is made from a different manufacturer.

from what the hinges look like on the M17 they are very well designed and look like quality metal, not crappy pressed steel.

Thanks, guys. I'm considering the m17... Searched the board, but could not find a thread that was inclusive of all the "caveats" around this machine. I'll search again, but are there any specific widespread problems?

Tape left on the heatsinks are a pretty common problem. And for a bit, dead pixels on the screen were a problem, but I've not heard anything else regarding that lately - think it was fixed with an update.

Kind of hard for me to link conversations with AW Customer Service reps. Sorry...but the exact quote from one of them (well documented for my BBB complaint) was "We have had to switch distributors of the video cards due to numerous problems with the original distributors." My response. "Yes, we have heard about the tape being left on the cards." Her response. "Yes, that is one of the issues. So we will have more in from the new distributor soon."

<shrug> Take it for what you will...up to you. No matter to me. The OP asked about problems, and that's one of the problems with the M17 - HOPEFULLY they have it fixed now, because I don't want anyone to have the run-around that I had.

But if the OP does the search around the board, s/he can read the problems I had, along with a couple of other regulars who post here. FTR, my new M17 that I got yesterday is working fine so far. MUCH better than the original one I had...

That's called passing the buck. The GPU distributor has nothing to do with tape being on a GPU. That tape is from AW installing the GPUs and failing to remove the tape before doing so. And, there's only one GPU distributor for this setup.. Rioworks/Flextronics. Talk about creative excuses..
