    Hello notebook experts!
Hi guys im new here, but have been reading the forums for many months, so hello to all! :)
I've recently purchased an m17 notebook and love it, have had no problems so far, but having bought the 2gb option im looking to upgrade the ram to 4gb, my only question is what should i go for?

    Is it a noticeable difference having timings of 5 5 5 15
    Kingston HyperX Dual Channel Kit Memory 4 GB ( 2 x 2 GB ) SO DIMM 204-pin DDR3 1066 MHz / PC3-8500 CL5 1.5 V unbuffered non-ECC
    http://www.stuff-uk.net/?s=KHX8500S3ULK2/4GX

    or 6 6 6 16 timings
    PC3-8500 / 1066MHz / 2GB Modules / Intel XMP Edition
    http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/memory/ocz_pc3_8500_ddr3_intel_extreme_edition_sodimm

or is it worth saving my money and going for somthing like
    4GB kit (2GBx2), 204-pin SODIMM, DDR3 PC3-8500 memory module
    http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/partspecs.aspx?IMODULE=CT2KIT25664BC1067

Is the XMP ram really worth the extra money? What do you think, also will i have any compatibility problems with the above?
    I cant decide! Help!
    Thanks guys.

    Hi Breaks,

I couldnt help but notice on the Alienware.com(US) they have just released the 8GB or RAM option for the M17.
I have only ever had 4Gb of RAM in my M17 and it doesnt feel enough....I would say always get the highest amount of RAM that you can support and afford especially if your using 64bit OS.

good luck and I hope you make the right decision.

Hmmmm.... I have to admit, i've got the 4GB option, and I haven't really noticed it being a detractor (though I guess it's hard for me to know, after all I don't have an experience with a system with more RAM to compare it to..)

Tonytoff, when you say 4 Gb doesn't feel like enough, what do you mean? Programs run slowly, out of memory errors, not enough multitasking ability.... ?

Especially when you will, at most, trying brutally, use 3GB, and I am being extremely generous... I've never ever seem my RAM usage go to 45% and I only have 4GB...

    Total overkill.

Hi guys thanks for the replies.

I think ill go for the Crucial 4gb kit then, i was just intrigued to find out if anyone has any experience with the XMP versions.

And tonytoff as much as i'd like 8gb of ram, i really couldnt justify 1k US going on what madpengwin says. I've just forked out for a x9100 so looking forward to getting that, and the 4gb ram should bring me up to a good standard to x9100, 4gb ram, 1920 screen, crossfire 3870s and ripley case. :)

Just to confirm really, do you think this is the best choice, i'd hate to regret purchasing once ive got it! heres the link:

What did you guys go for and why?

Oh yes I agree with not being able to pay that price for 8Gb....I think you would have to be insane to pay that much.

When I said 4Gb doesnt feel enough sometimes perhaps thats just me being greedy but I do struggle multi-tasking sometimes but I guess you techies would argue thats my T9600 processor....dunno, Im not an expert on these issues.

Does anyone know if you can fit third-party RAM on these M17s??

And if you can use third party RAM(as I suspect Breaks is referring to) then would it void the warranty.

I have OCZ in mine, and it came with some other garbage. I don't even remember the name of the crap. You can use any RAM with the proper specifications.

This has been answered several times before, you can fit any third party RAM into it the warranty is only void if you damage the computer fitting it, if it needs to be repaired put the original RAM back in and send it back.

and thanks Simon for answering my question about Alienware RAM policy....I did not know this.
By the way what make of RAM would be in my M17??
and if I wanted to upgrade to 8Gb of RAM what specifications do I need to look for and is it easy to fit??

I dont want to hijack the thread...just asking.

forget that question about 8Gb of RAM, I have just read some other threads which explained that it would make no difference to somebody like me. I will probably just look at a better processor.

    thanks.
