Hi. I am considering buying an m17x. Forgive me if this question has been asked before, but the only thing is I would prefer to have one 8800m GTX instead of the dual configuration. Would it be possible to buy the computer with the dual 8600 GT's to save money and take them out and replace them with one 8800m GTX card? Is this something I could do myself, or would the motherboard need to be replaced?

    Thanks for your help!

Don't forget the warranty issues that might arise.

Yes that's true. But would it be possible to do that? Since they offer the 8600, 8700 and 8800 configurations, I'm assuming the motherboard would be able to accommodate any of those cards right?

sure, but they offer all of them only in SLI. who knows whether the m17x is able to accommodate a single card (from a BIOS/drivers perspective).

if I were you I would consider taking the SLI 8700s. Gives you the vast majority of the 8800's power (70-90%), it's cheaper than buying a whole new 8800 (the 8700 upgrade costs $300, a single 8800 would cost $500) and you'll have no potential warranty issues. That said, SLI is an imperfect technology, so there will be games which don't take full advantage of it.

Not sure, they might have different number of slots, maybe try calling them?

Yeah, I think the SLI 8700s would be my best bet. I really don't play very hardcore games like Crysis or anything, and most of the games I do play would only be working on one video card anyways. My computer now has a single 7950 GTX card, and from what I've read, the 8700s are weaker than a 7950. But hopefully the better CPU and more memory I would get in the m17x would offset any performance drop. What you think??

I don't understand why you want to buy a new PC ?
If you already have a 7950, your PC should'nt be very old.
If you want to replace it, buy a 2x8800 SLI else what the point ?

Doen't Sagers use all desktop parts? and doest that make them extremely hot, and greatly reduce the battery life?

no, only some sagers use desktop CPUs, every other part is mobile (though of course like any DTRs they have low battery life)

Last I checked this is the Alienware forum, not the Sager forum. Go promote them somewhere else, thanks.
