My HD is having issues over here in Afghanistan... can anyone tell me what type of HD our m17X have in them, and what size I can upgrade to?

Basically, I intend to rebuild with a bigger HD and use the current one as a reformatted secondary.

Thanks all! (Seems Afghan moon dust is taking its toll on my baby)... it is not even 6 months old.

They're industry standard sized 2.5" HDD's, nothing special about them. Some more recent large capacity drives are a few MM taller than the industry specification, so I would be carefull about the purchase of these before taking measurements, typically this is stated clearly in the description of the item. The largest 2.5" HDD's out currently touch the 640-700GB per drive range. I would consider a slightly smaller drive with a 7200RPM specification however.

The Seagate 7200.4 500GB 2.5" HDD's do just nicely in these machines. I picked up mine at Newegg when I was overseas.

    Model # ST9500420AS is without Free-Fall protection
    Model # ST9500420ASG is with Free-Fall protection

No not as far as i know.. They(seagate) own maxtor and veritas approx a 1/3 or something like that I would have to look up...

Even so, different lines ect.. Seagates suck IMO..

Both of my Seagate's (I have one of each) have been running flawlessly for over a year now. To each his own, I guess.

Dell uses Seagates in the m17x, or at least that's what they shoved into mine when I had the 1TB RAID 0 array. Occasionally they would 'shutter' (probally a function of the issue with the SLI 280m's) and after just a few months I was already running into major BSOD's from bad sectors. Besides that they were very quiet (considering there were 2 of them) seek times were good too.

    This is good information.

I will have to find another place to order from since Newegg won't allow me to order from an IP outside the US. Even though they know I am US and that I am military...

Rather frustrating to say the least.

but, good info, thanks all. I hope I can get a HD before the final BSOD.

my suggestion is to run a full scandisk at least once every couple of days to find the bad sectors before they get to critical windows files.

    1. public proxy server
    2. remote control a pc at home
    3. have someone at home order and re-ship to you (lame)
    4. live chat or call them (calling gets a better person than live chat) - i had a friend have this happen to them and they got some type of credit/gift card for the inconvenience

if it were me, i'd call. and thanks for your service.
