I'm buying an Alienware area 51 m17x and I am planning on buying the first video card thats on the list when customizing the laptop. I was wondering how much RAM that card has? The card is a DUAL 256MB Nvidia GeForce Go 8600 GT. How much RAM does that have?

    2 x 256MB?

essentially just 256MB of VRAM when you use it though.

two 8600m-gt with 256MB of VRAM each, so 512MB total.

Not sure if that card is worth anymore than playing the Sims ;)

that statement is quite simply ridiculous. those cards can run any modern games at mid-low settings, no problem.

If he is adventurous and doesnt mind losing warranty, he can upgrade the gpu at a much better price than AW offers. Money saved buying it on the cheap is not a Simms game, its reality.

Me bad, but is the $300 additional for the Dual 512MB NVIDIA® GeForce® Go 8700M GT not a good price now vs if the op was to upgrade later on?

not really, since the 8700m-gt is basically just a 8600m-gt with slightly higher clocks. the performance difference isn't worth 300$ IMO. better take the cheapest option now and put those 300$ towards a set of 9800m-gt's in the future.

Well I decided to just get a new graphics card. But the problem is that it's a PCI 2.0-Express card. I'm not sure if my computer has PCI 2.0 how can I find out?

PCIe 2.0 is a desktop standard... you'll need a laptop card. check mxm-upgrade.com, and of course ebay.

Oh sorry. What I mean't was instead of getting a new PC I'm keeping this desktop and getting a new graphics card for it. So when you say standard do you mean like normal or as in really good???

Do you know your motherboard model number or the chipset it uses? Or perhaps the manufacturers model info if it's not a DIY build.
