Hey, i run my m17x on win 7 rc and have some problems with oc my sli 280m. I used Nvidia System Tools and OCCT runs 3h without an error/crash but when i reboot, the book freez...
I searched and try something and found that the problem is Nvidia System Tools. It crash the system by loading any profil(no matter what clock values).
I could use another oc tool but all show me wronge clock values.
Is there somebody who has the same problems or a solution?

Thanks. -
i do not know of any other overclocking programs right now
Ntune is the best out right now ..... try different version OR actually WAIT for it to be supported in win 7 -
Yeah that's a good point Moo. I was thinking that it could be a Win7 compat issue. Haven't seen any other posts from other Win7 owners here mentioning it though.
NTune (Nvidia System Tools) is the one I would stick with as well. If you are going to OC, why not stick with the peeps who made your GPU - -
well their program has intimate access to our chipset
-
i installed vista and got the same problem -.-

there is two programs. ntune and nvidia systems tools. don't use ntune. it's old and there's bugs in there. and there's something in there that constantly crashes and blue screens your computer. nvidia systems tool 6.05 is the answer for all of that.
uninstall everything you have named nvidia, then install a gpu driver, then install nvidia system tools and everything should be ok.
now why are you using occt to test your overclock. you don't need to overclock your gpu's for gaming period. only use it for benchmarking and then set it back to normal for gaming. my 9800m gtx at 500/1250/800 maxed out everything out there. and your 280m should be about 583/1450/950. and you have sli on top of that. there is no reason to use occt and kill your gpus.
you are better off setting clocks, benchmarking, and see results. repeat.
if you still want to that then run furmark, or atitool and see what you get. no need for a serious program like that to kill your new computer. -

@batboy. welcome to the alienware forums. i see you were at the dell xps m1730 and you were a great help over there. hopefully you are over here as well

my fav game is battleforge and that need more power or didnt scale so good with sli.. no idea but my fps are not so nice.
i dont use ntunes, i installed the nvidia system tools 6.05. if i set the clocks , it works fine but when i restart, the system crash.
with 6.03 too... -

what driver are you using?
try 185.85
190.15
190.38
190.40
186.42 -
Don't run your overclocks at startup, create a profile and load it when you need it. Running software OC's @ startup is a bad idea, always select no when prompted to run @ startup.
-
atm i try dox 182. with dox 185.85 i got on sli performance mode a crazy pic, looks like lsd mode^^ only the 9400 works.
i tryed 190.40 but i got some slow downs in games. my fps fallen to ~2 for a few seconds. With the dell beta driver is the same...
maybe battleforge sucks on the mashine but i like it and i will run it. -
Only Dox 182.46 and older work.
-
If i load a profil by application, the system freez too...
I dont understand it. If i set the clocks on 670,1030,1600. My System still run stabil, i can run any games over hours. But load the same or any lower clocks with a profil dont work.
I would use another oc tool but they show me wrong default clocks. -
You didn't shut off powermiser did you?
-
I ran into this same issue as well, the problem is not drivers but the nvidia system tools application running on win7. When set to boot from a profile it will freeze no matter what even if profile contains default settings
-
-
It's a registry hack more or less.
-
i searched for that and found something and i used it. I dont know if i did it right because on the video folder are soo many sub folders. I used the folders with many entries(i think sli profils).
GPU-Z shows me now the real clock values after win start but the system still crashes when loading a profil.
-
-
yes, i tryed it. was that bad? My girl friend(she is much better in english) told me,that your post mean, that i dont have to do it... :/ iam from german and dont understand everything...
i could remove it, or not? -
Reverse what you did. If you used the switch to turn powermiser off turn it back on. With it off your Nvidia System Tools profile will freeze every time.
-
ok thanks,i removed it. But the freeze when i load a profil stay.
-
Did you actually turn it back on with the switch and reboot? If you did then check your registry and make sure the settings went back to default.
-
on default, there wasn exists such entrys, i created them self and removed now. I had the freeze problem since the first time i used nvidia system tools. So the reghack dosnt matter for my problem.
-
Any other changes that would manipulate the GPUs? Did you try different drivers?
-
i installed the dox 182,190.40 and dell beta performance driver. all times the some error and no i dont use any tricks or hacks or what ever.
first i used it under win 7 and i thought, that was the problem but after i installed vista, i got the same problem. -
-
i mean with error the freeze problems when automatic load a profil(after boot or for a application/game... )
i used driver cleaner but i will try driver sweeper now. -
It's the same thing shouldn't matter. Do you still have problems with manually loading the profile?
-
du you mean if i set the clock manual? no problems. i dont know how i load a profil on another way.
-
I'm not in front of my system right now but it's called something like nvprofile. It let's you select which profile to load manually. I wouldn't auto load any profiles. Someone else here in front of their system may be able to give you the correct name for the utility. It should have installed with NST.
-
when i load it manual it works.
-
Then I would guess the issue is OS related. If you can delay the startup with Windows it will probably work. With that said I would only load it when needed.
m17x Win 7 and oc 280m...
