If the drive came with your system, contact Dell Support.

No (as long as you have on-site warranty coverage). They can ship it out to the local tech and the tech will replace it for you. If you prefer, you can install it however in the event you cause damage during the course of the install, Dell will not cover it. Once the damaged drive is replaced, the original drive is shipped back to Dell. If you do decide to install it yourself, reference the Service Manual ( HERE). You basically have to gut the whole machine to do it. The first time taking it apart is very time consuming. I replaced my stock DVD drive with the BC-5600s BluRay when I upgraded my CPU. :)

So can any laptop bluray drive be put into an m17x at the expense of the dvd drive? Or do you need a specific model?

    Thanks

99% it's model specific, but if I were you I would just contact dell and have it covered under the warranty. Depending on how old it is they might throw a gift card your way for the troubles. I'd go through dell if I were you. Are you covered under a warranty?

Edit: Also I think the model number is UJ-235, thats the only one I've found. Anyone care to correct me?

Definately contact dell in that case. Thats your safest bet. After all, you paid for that warranty, why not use it? That was part of the price when you paid for the laptop.
