I recently came onto a large sum of money (for my age, anyway) from a succesful software project. I am looking to upgrade a few of my things (car, watch, etc) and was also considering getting a gaming notebook (as my macbook works well, but obviously not a true "gaming" machine). My hunt for the best of the best has led me back to alienware, but after my m15x horror story I am more than a little skeptical. I do not need their CS but just want to find out more on the build quality of the m17x vs the m15x, as cost is not an issue, i would prefer the m17x over the m17. Has anyone had / heard of hinge issues, cracking, overheating, etc on this model?

I've had my m17x since October, and it has never given me any problems at all. No cracking, overheating, hinge issues, etc. It's heavy... not a complaint, just a statement. I take the thing to and from work everyday in my Orion backpack, which to me doesn't make me feel like I'm lugging an 11 lb notebook in it.

I have a m17x with the two 9800 gt's, 2.5 ecu and 4 gigs of ram. LOVE it. You can tell alot of attention into detail went into making it. Has helped me pass the time greatly. Highly recomended.

Don't do it. I was in a similar boat and now have a $4500 paper weight. The machine has not been right since I recieved it an Alienware does not believe in lemon's and feels the tiral and error approch to tech support works just fine. 8 month later and 3/4 of the machines hardware replaced, I am looking at calling a lawyer and looking for a machine that actually works as intended.

Now, this could be the 1 out of 100 senerio, but, what if your the 1. I have never, ever hear of a company that does not stand behind thier product or service. Anyone else, after the (4th) video card, motherboard, (2) keyboards etc etc etc were replaced with (4) new OS installed, would have just agreed to provide me with a new machine and tried to fix it on their time. Not Alienware.

After this last attempt, the very first time I started it, I recieved a critical error messaged that meant the OS was corupt. They just installed it and it took 2 weeks to get it back..

I suggest you do a search one the web. Check this site out. Its very eye opening. I wish I had..............

I guess its like flipping a coin and hoping you get heads and your system works. For a $4500 investment like mine, I would go elsewhere.

I will sell you mine for $1,000 off what I paid. Never been used.

No prob, I would never do that to someone anyway. I was kidding.

Unfortunately, I have more ethics than Alienware.

I was indending to use it for CAD as I am on it about 50 hours a week. This was supposed to be my baby and turned into a nightmare. What really bums me out is that most people would want a refund right? not me, I only want a machine that work in a reasonable amount of time. Sounds good right? Does that seem unreasonable or unfair to them?

I truely feel that 8 months is long enough. Even their tech support agrees that they would be upset and not happy with their response if they were on the other side of the phone. But as they tell me "their hands are tied" and its the company policy.

The policy sucks. They should stand behind their product and if they can't fix it after seveal tries, they should at a min, replace it. They could then fix it at their leasure and sell it refur. and still make a profit, just not as much.

I had my Blu Ray go bad, a new one was sent to me promptly. The impresive thing is that I am currently on a little C.O.P. in the midle of no where in Iraq

Brand loyalty is hard to get, but easy to lose. When manufacturer/builders/whatever, don't get this, they go the way of the dodo. If you don't believe me, ask GM. They were once the king of the auto industry.

The M17 is Alienware's gaming flagship, isn't it? Have you considered it instead of the M17x?
