Hi all,
First time poster here, been lurking quite a bit tho!
SO! I'm planning on buying the alienware m17x, and I got all the ups and downs sorted out (32-bit support only and all). But something that I didn't figure out completely yet is the alienFX lighting system.
So here's a list of questions arround it:
- Has every system got the lights behind the alienhead & touch buttons
- Has every system got keyboard backlight
- Is every system capable of changing the color of the alienhead & touch
button lights
- Is every system capable of changing the color of the keyboard backlight
I'm asking all that just to be sure, but my assumptions are like this:
- every system has alienhead - touch button AND keyboard lights in one
color (the one color you select when selecting your screen)
- you pay for beeing able to change the color of the lights of both
alienhead/touch buttons and keyboard backlight (AlienFX)
Amarite, or am I completely missing something here![]()
Waiting for your competent minds to think of an answer, I thank you all in advance,
Bedeone

Hi Bedeone and welcome to the forum.
as ar as i know if you chose the alien fx option you will have the option to change all the lighting ie. keyboard, mousepad & alienhead. the only thing you dont get compared to the m15x is the lightpipe around the edge of the screen.
if im wrong someone will soon shoot me down -
Thanks for the fast response MrDJ.
But what I was actually trying to refer to (and in which I failed after re-reading my post) were these two options when you're building the laptop.
What this tells me is that you need the second option to change keyboard color. But do you also need it to change alienhead/touch buttons/mousepad lighting colors? or is that standard.
And if you don't select the second option, does the keyboard still have that "definite" color I selected at the top under the "display" tab? Or does it have no color at all?
My apologies if my questions was badly stated, I'm not a native english speaker, but I'm trying my best here.
Greetings,
Bedeone -
yep, that is just your base colour for when you first turn it on. you can then change the lighting and chose any of the 12 colours.
-
So basicly,
Everything except the keyboard is lighted standard & has 12 interchangeable colours, without any options.
And the AlienFX keypad enables keyboard backlighting?
So without alienFX keypad, the keyboard has got no backlighting, not even the standard colour.
And with it, it has got a backlight and has 12 interchangeable colours...
Correct? or not ... we shall know soon enough
Greetings

you will need to chose the second option
hope that clears it up for you. -
no the alien fx is for all the lighting except the head on the lid.
if you do not chose the second option "Alienware® Customisable AlienFX® Keypad with Numeric Pad [+€ 41]" you will not be able to change any colours. -
Soooooooo....
If I do not select:

welcome bedeone...
you will be able to change the colors to various locations on the m17x.
the AlienFX has several areas you can light all with different colors at the same time if you so choose...
i.e. keypad can be auqua while the touchpad could be red....etc...
and what DJ said... -
But but but but ='<
What's the difference then between selecting
Will I not be able to change any colours?
Will I not be able to change keyboard colours only?
Or will I have no keyboard colours at all, but have all the rest instead?
Greetings,
Bedeone -
nope,no colours or lights if you chose the first option but lots of pretty changable colours if you chose the second option.
i only had the m15x which is slightly different as it also had the lightpipe around the screen. hopefully someone who owns an m17x can help you a little better than me. -
I'm starting to get it now ^^
So not even alienhead / touchbuttons / mousepad with first option?
I'd like to express my gratitude towards you MrDJ & Ryujin for the quick answers =)
Greetings,

i think thats about right Bedeone.
but hopefully someone who owns an m17x will clarify this for you.
it is the fx lights that actually make these computers stand out from all the others on the market and i would highly recommend getting them for the small amount of money the Alienware FX option costs.

I thank you very much for your time and effort MrDJ.
You sure helped me alot.
If it was just the keyboard that wasn't backlit then I wouldn't have gotten the option.
But now I feel like it is indeed essential for the "wow" factor of this magnificent unit.
Perhaps expect an m17x review when I get it =D
