When I ordered my m17x, I got it with the cheapest processor, (p8600). I actually have a T9600 (ordered a while back to upgrade another laptop). I am thinking of putting the T9600 in my Alienware. Will this show any noticable performance gain or only something like a few percent in a benchmark? Also would this void the warranty?

It won't be very noticeable and yes the processor is not a customer replaceable part so it technically would void your warranty.

Dell won't care as long as you don't break anything and be sure to take it out before sending it back . :)

Also in gaming you may notice 5-10 FPS difference but really not much

I thinking to ordered my m17x, with the cheapest processor P8600 2.4 Ghz
Can I upgrade later on with the Quad X9300 2.53 Ghz? and if so would it be difficult to do ?
    Thanks

Yes you can upgrade and difficulty depends on experience. Most here are willing to help so it should not be too difficult if you haven't done it before.

I just upgraded my P8600 to a Q9100 (OEM version) last week. It wasn't very hard to do and took me about 20 minutes. There is a video with instructs in the All Powerful sticky thread at the top of this section. I watched the video the night before and was able to do the cpu upgrade without looking back.

My main concern was warranty and how bad Dell is about "enforement". For instance, Asus puts a tamper sticker across something. Apple has three different "wet" sensors in their iPhone. Anyone ever mod an xbox 360? You know what I am talking about. I was just curious if Dell is following suit with all the others or are they as good as they were when I got my inspiron 9300 (they actually provided me with a great sm ... pictures too!! ... for upgrading just about any component in the laptop -- screen and GPU included.

People can talk bad about Dell all they want, but they are alot better than all those other guys that rig their crap just to call you a "tamperer" and not fix it even when it is something wrong with their crap (intended toward M$ and the whole rrd scenario)
