Windows Vista® Home Premium (64-bit Edition) with Service Pack 1
    Intel® Core™2 Extreme Quad QX9300 2.53GHz (12MB Cache, 1066MHz FSB)
4GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1066MHz (will likely add on more myself)
    17-inch WideUXGA 1920x1200 (1200p)
    Dual NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 260M, 2GB
    500GB 7,200RPM w/ Free Fall Protection
    Slot-Load Dual Layer Blu-ray Combo (BR-ROM, DVD+-RW, CD-RW)
Internal 300Mbps Dual-Band a/g/n Wireless with MIMO Technology
3Yr Ltd Hardware Warranty, InHome Service after Remote Diagnosis

$3,461.46 after student discount plus hefty CA taxes.

As for uses, I'm pretty much looking for a multimedia/sporadic heavy gaming rig. Mostly a lot of photo video editing/encoding but I do enjoy a good game once in a while like Crysis and Mass Effect, which I have. I figure quad core will also come of use if I have to use any intensive 3D molecule software for classes. I might consider using the Q9000 to get it under $3k though (and maybe even add a SSD with the savings) for that reason. Also considered a Sager Core i7 for the same use but Dell/Alienware's at-home tech support has been bliss for me and that made the difference.

    Thoughts?

If you've got the money, sure. If you'd like to save some, drop that warranty to a two-year, switch out the blu-ray drive for standard, and go with the 2.8Ghz dual core proc- you can always get a new proc down the road.

Otherwise, it sounds great if you're willing to pay that much.

looks just liek some thing you would need , if you are using it for what you say the quad should be fully optimized and not wasted. And i assure you laptop would play some games.

Well, I'd want blu-ray function since I have a good sized collection I'd bring along. I've actually gone through 4 years of college without a laptop so my original savings for one have increased quite a bit. Let's me splurge a bit.

No doubt about it's gaming capabilities here. Deciding between saving money on a Q9000 or a QX9300 is pretty much on my mind.
