I hope this isn't too stupid of a question, but I've always heard that laptops don't like running in their non-native resolution, so would the m17x not perform as well or would I run into issues if I hooked it up to a 1900x1080 TV or monitor?

There shouldn't be a problem at all with it working, The only problem would be that its harder to run games at a higher res, so you may have to drop some settings. :D

Edit - That said, The above only applies to the 1440x900 screen, If you have the 1920x1200 Screen, It should run better. :p

It's like with all LCD screens. Running at native resolutions to the screen will make the image sharper and keep it over the full screen. Running a lower resolution will either scale the image up which can degrade image quality or not display the image over the whole screen (black borders). It all depends which scaling options you choose in your display drivers.
If you hook it up to an external LCD TV or monitor that has 1920x1080 resolution (a.k.a. "Full HD"), set the resolution to that in the video card drivers and you will have full image quality. Also make sure your monitor is set correctly for displaying PC images regarding overscan and such and that you set the refresh rate to something your monitor can display (usually 60Hz).
The integrated screen on the M17x has a native resolution of 1920x1200, by the way.
