Is it just me, or do the speakers on these machines stink?! My old xps m1730 had amazing speakers. Is there anything that can be done to improve the speakers?

Yeah, there's a way to improve the speakers. Get an external pair. I'd recommend Bose, a little pricey but their speakers are top notch sound quality.

Either that or somehow make your own speakers although I'm not too sure that's a good idea unless you're good at that sort of thing :p

The first-gen M17x had unremarkable speakers; the new M17x has far better speakers, the best I have heard on a notebook next to the Toshiba X205/X305.

Based on the fact that you think the speakers think, it would be best to go with an external pair.

This. I highly recommend Logitech Z-2300's if you are looking for a decent 2.1 system.

Otherwise a nice set of cans is a good call. I just picked up a pair of Denon AHD1001k's from someone on another forum and man..they are excellent!

I would only use the stock speakers on a laptop if I had no externals available.

I would never lay any such curse upon an individual.

On topic: Logitech manufactures some 2 channel USB powered speakers that are pretty decent for mid-end usage. Don't expect them to perform on the level of their powered audio hub or more powerful units as they are only 5w, but they indeed will sound infinitely better than the built in laptop speakers.
