Hi all lucky i backed up my hd few weeks ago but ive got alot of stuff i need of my m17x today it just turned off by it self maybe overheat or grapihcs card problem i cant turn it on again! i waited an hour pulled the batery out and it worked for a few mins ill try tomz and boot up in safe mode. problem is im getting a r2 next week and dell wont fix this one because im gettin a replacement! it had 2 1 gig hard drives in raid 0, what can i do to get the data of the hard drives? im assuming i cant put them into my new r2 because it has a differnt chipset,

is there anybody out there with a r1 m17x maybe i could try and bring my hard drives?

    Thanks guys

You could put them in the R2 and pull off the information that way, I had to do this for a friends M1730, Just make sure you put them in the same configuration (As in Drive0 is in the Drive0 Slot and Drive1 is in Drive1).

You may get lucky and it may boot without problems, but im not 100% certain that will happend due to the different hardware in the M17x R1/R2 Usually if they are similar enough it will still boot, But still, If it doesn't boot get hold of a Linux LiveCD ( http://www.slax.org For example), boot into that and copy the required data to an external drive or USB key.

Bit messy but I've never had problems doing it this way.

You absolutely can put them in the R2. If you want you might even be able to swap them with the HDD's in the R2. Another step to consider if you have another computer, is cloning the R1 HDD's to the R2 HDD's and them back into the R2. This will require an external HDD enclosure so you can hook it up to the computer. Maybe even two HDD enclosures. You'll also need a cloning program like Acronis True Image

Have you gone in to the BIOS to turn RAID back on? Maybe it's an easy fix.

Thats one of the reasons I stay away from RAID 0. If one HDD goes down, you lose everything since the data is split between both HDD's. I install my O/S and programs to HDD0 and use HDD1 as a storage drive. HDD0 being my faster drive, HDD1 being my larger capacity drive. Food for thought.

In theory it should as the drive would have a built in RAID controller.

Respawn disc is good if your installing a new HDD. It is an image of your HDD as it comes from the factory. Resource DVD is the disc with all the apps/drivers and the W7 disc is obviously the disc with the O/S.

Yes, esata is faster than USB 2.0
