I'd like to upgrade my m5550 to 2mb and I don't want to send it back to Alienware to do it, nor do I want to buy anything else from them. I have the laptop but I just haven't been impressed by the Alienware corp.

Does anyone know if standard aftermarket memory will work on the m5550?

just go to newegg or whatever and grab a pair of 1Gb DDR2 667, it'll be noted as 200-pin notebook memory
i haven't heard anything about Alienware using memory from aliens, so i'm pretty sure it works

crappyGPU is right - as long as its 200-pin, DDR2-667 (PC5300) SO-DIMMs, you'll have no problem putting them in your m5550.

Don't get the m5550. I'm sorry, but there are much better laptops out there right now.

If you have to buy a laptop soon, look at the Asus G1 (More powerful then the m5550 and a much better price).

Or you can wait for santa rosa, which is out right now, and companies should have it in their systems soon.

I'll second Stone on this; there are going to be more Santa Rosa gaming notebooks available in the next month or so, the Asus G1S stands out as one of the fastest. I would imagine that Alienware will have Santa Rosa notebooks soon, hopefully there won't be a repeat of last year and their slow transition.

I think nightrider already owns the M5550.

    Did you order the RAM?

No, I have not ordered the RAM yet.

If I had to get another laptop, I'd get the Compal HEL80. I like my m5550 but I do think that it's overpriced. Its pricing is on par with Apple and it's not that--so...

Either that, or get an Apple. I'm actually thinking of putting my m5550 on ebay and getting a Macbook. I'm not playing video games right now anyway which was the main reason that I bought he m5550.
