I think it is a heat issue but not sure if the video card just went bad. 2D performance is fine but can't game for more then 10-15 minutes without graphical issues. Tried it with Age of Empires III last night on all different resolutions and eye candy levels eventually resulting in a black screen that required a hard reboot. During the reboot I noticed some coloered pixels showing up on the boot screen that eventually cleared after cooling down.

    Specs
    Alienware 5790
    Core 2 Duo 2.16
    3 gig ram
    ATI X1800

Is there anywhere I can purchase new thermal pads for the video card to aid in ruling out the heat issue?

Also I tried CPU-z and Speedfan but neither reported GPU temp. I didn't see an option to even select it. Am I missing something?

Not yet but I will tonight when I get home. This is the second card that has been in the machine too the first was replaced under warantee. Has anyone ever tried another card in this laptop? I have BIOS version 1.2N right now but can still get 1.19w from my hive.
