this is on an alienware area 51 m7700.

the screen will flicker then go off. it will then stay either black or grey with the backlight still visible.

    external monitor will work perfect.

i removed the casing and switched the lcd and still same problem.
i switched cables and still nothing.

on the external monitor i was looking at the display properties, i turned my back and turned back and the lcd was back on.

this laptop is for a customer who said he took it to a shop and they dusted it out and when they put it back together it worked fine.

    would this be motherboard related?
    would it be cable related?
or something in between that i may not know of?

i have another that has some broken parts, but i may be able to switch parts over if you guys can help me with the problem. thanks

    Martin

well if you've tried different displays and cables, then it sounds like a motherboard issue.

A customer just handed me a m7700 with the same problem yesterday.

The m7700 was working fine in the morning, the problem appeared suddenly without any flickering first in the evening. The laptop was handled normally, no shock or rough usage.
This morning I tested it with an external monitor and it works fine that way.

Next I'm gonna open it and check all cable connections, but I was wondering if more people did met the same issue and managed to solve it.
I don't have easy access to any replacement part as I am outside of the US.

If you had some of other broken parts.
    1) try to replaced the Inverter board.
If no help, then replaced the video cable (be sure to match the same exact cable part # that you had inside the lcd display..

Yes, it is next to the mic.
Remove the front platisc panel, you should see it
if I am right, the part number should be 76-D9TAR-010 or 011
