Alright. So good friend of mine left his m9700 in the car in the hot AZ summer yesterday for over 5 hours. Upon inspection of this laptop it seems his video card/s are fried as it's artifacting on startup but boots into windows fine. This laptop is about 3 years old and is running 7900gs go's in SLI; I've tried switching the cards around and running with only one card but it seems it needs both cards to even give picture.

Besides buying 2 new video cards direct from dell/aw is there any chance at redemption for him? Has anyone confirmed if an upgrade path in terms of video cards is even possible?

I poked around on ebay and i didn't really see any prime examples of video cards he could buy :( Or even answers to my above questions.

since you are not under warranty anymore i dont think AW would give you any new cards. they probably dont even have anymore in stock. i doubt you can upgrade too.

You're going to have to check if you can use the E1705's 7900GS in the M9700. If nothing else, he will at least be able to run 1 card but not SLi until he can find a slave card. Check about the 7900gs in the M9700 though.
