Does AW upgrade like that? Ebay may be a better option. That GTX should run most games "decent" at lower resolutions. Crysis, maybe 1280.1024 @ 30 FPS - CoD same res around 45 FPS or so.. He may be able to go 1440x900 @ decent rates...but wouldn't go any higher than that. It's a decent card, but not gonna run anything @ native res. Maybe Worms.

1280 should run great.. AW probably has an upgrade program.. I'm not entirely aware of their workings. But, it would still be less expensive to check ebay I'm sure. Then throw that card up on ebay for sale.

    To help out Mr.Moo:

    I have a m9750, 7950GTX SLI, 2.0Ghz CPU, 2 gig ram, 1900x1200 screen.

Here is the deal on games: I run mostly Strategy, Action, RPG, etc. Im not a Crysis fan.

Neverwinter Nights 2 - Run in SLI, with edited SLI profile, 1900x1200 res, 30 fps average

Oblivion - Run in SLI, with edited SLI profile, 1900x1200 res, 45 fps average

M2TW - Run in SLI, with edited SLI profile, 1900x1200 res, 45 fps average

The Witcher - Run in SLI, with edited SLI profile, 1680x1050 res, 25 fps average

Ok, now some games simply do NOT have good SLI performance. This has two major factors. One, I only have half the ram for textures, so that means I need to drop the res down to 1440x900 most times for those cases. Second, only one GPU working (but you already knew that).

Mass Effect - Run in single card mode, 1280x800 res, 25 fps average (this will be the same settings for Crysis, UT3, etc for me)

    Hope that helps

Brainer has a good guide of what the 7950 GTX's in SLi are capable of and I believe Alienware still has an upgrade program to install an additional 7950GTX for SLi. However, "upgrading" to 8700s in SLi is actually a steep step down in performance and not recommended.

Check out Brainer's Guide SLi vs non-SLi Performance

7950gtx is more powerful than 8700m-gt. when the HD4870 comes out, your friend might want to get a cheap set of used HD3870s from an OCZ whitebook owner who wants to upgrade.
