To make a long story short my computer has recently been giving me problems and would not longer startup. After replacing the mobo and checking everythinge else, the computer still wouldn't start. I applied a bit of pressure to the side of my cpu (1.6 Ghz t5500) and the computer started up about everytime I did that. After a while it stopped working completely so I figured my cpu was dead and I ordered another one from a laptop parts site.

    here is the site
    http://www.excelcomputerinc.com/html/details.asp?ref=982&category=cpu

After trying it the computer wouldn't even post and the fans did not spin. So after reading countless threads through the entire day I think my first CPU (t5500) is a socket m and the one that I ordered (t5550) was a socket P. Is this right? Do m9750's only support socket m processors, and is the website falsely advertising a cpu that will not even work in the m9750?

I appreciate any help I can get before I start a hellstorm with the sites customer support.

    my specs are:
    M9750
    T5500(1.6 Ghz)
    2GB ram
    Geforce 8700m gt
    Windows Vista

P.S. fixing this laptop has been the most abysmal experience of my life :(

Yes the t5500 is socket M and the t5550 is socket P.

The M9750 will only support a socket M processor.

The fastest socket M you can get is the t7600 @ 2.33 GHZ.

    I have a t7200 @ 2.0 GHZ in my M9750.

Thanks for the reply. I've had to keep reading up on it to make sure, but I've heard that there are m9750's with the Santa Rosa platform that do support socket p. Is that true? If it is then I guess that means the site isn't falsely advertising the cpu to work in a m9750 and I'm screwed out of $90.

If the m9750 has only ever had one chipset and it never supported socket p then at least I have an arguement against them, but if there are socket p m9750's then i'm SoL..

Sorry, the Napa platform in the M9750 will only accept the socket M, Merom, processors.

Check out this link to ebay.

There are no Santa Rosa platform m9750s. The closest upgrade would be an m17 laptop.

To the best of my knowledge, the socet M, or Merom, processor is the only one that will work in the M9750. The only way to get a faster processor than the t7600 @ 2.33GHZ is to get an M17 or higher.

Thanks for the help. I saw some sites that said the m9750 had santa rosa but I was hesitant to believe it. I figured this site will give me a bunch of crap about returning it and getting another processor (or refund) because they say to check and make sure the processor is compatible.

Looking at the specs it seemed like it would have worked fine. Figure t5500 to a t5550 would have just been a speed increase instead of a whole different socket.

At least with this info I should be able to argue they are falsely advertising a chip that is incompatible with the laptop they are trying to sell it for.

I found a wiki site from an old post here that lists all the laptop processors and which socket the belong to so that should help me find the processor I want.

The fact that the site states it works in the M9750 when it is blatantly incompatible is enough reason to demand a refund imo. The processors that work are the T5500, T7200, T7400, T7600.
I'd recommend you go for the T7200 since it's not hugely pricey and is a massive step up from the T5500 which really is a huge bottleneck to have in the m9750 :)

Thanks Simon. I checked out some ebay listings for the t7200 as it is the fastest/cheapest one I've seen since the t7600 price is insane. I'll try and see if I can get my refund on the processor but I know they are going to give me the run around.

Probably going to have to threaten to call the BBB or something to get them motivated. Then again they might been good about it and refund. I'll have to call em up tomorrow.

Alright sorry to revive this post. I found a T7200 on ebay for about $80 so I bought it. I don't think I'll ever get my money back for the processor I ordered though.

Here is what the support told me:

Being a service professional you must know that depending on how the laptop was configured and when it was built, it may have several different processor and motherboard choices.

During the ordering process (click-through page) you agreed you removed your existing part and matched the PART NUMBER, DESCRIPTION, and PHOTO with the part you are ordering. This assures you are ordering the correct part.

If you had removed the processor before ordering, as you stated you did, you would have seen this was not the processor for your configured laptop.

So then I decide to email Alienware and ask them if the t5550 works in the m9750, and they reply back and tell me it does...

I feel like I'm going insane trying to figure this out. Is there a t5550 that is socket m or does Alienware not even know what is compatible with their systems? I replied back to them to ask if there was a certain revision mobo required for it or if all m9750 could use it.

I may not get my money back but I'm gonna get to the bottom of this
