Hello all. Im looking at buying a new laptop which will be my 3rd. First bought one in 98. Ive been out of the loop since 2004 when I bought my (large) Dell 9100 which at the time, was considered pretty top of the line. Getting back in the loop meant getting on here, seeing what people are talking about. I look at Dell first but something turned me on to this 9750 and so I spent the past couple weeks catching up on that VERY long thread here about it, and read all the other stuff and various reviews as well. Even wrote them asking them about the DX10 issue, Santa Rosa, and so on.
Im pretty sold on this laptop and am just waiting for Comic Con cause they MAY have a "convention deal" as I know they will have it there.
In the meantime, I see a LOT of people talking about DX10 and when and if and the new chip and when and if (I started that one-I know). I get caught up just like all of you in the "am I buying at the right time or will something better come out the day after I open my new system for a cheaper price.
I know to most of you, the video card and game issue is really important. But for all of you desparately trying to find out if and when DX10 cards will come out for this laptop or worried that Santa Rosa is not in it and never will be (Trust me, I do it too)........, for those of you frustrated at all the unknowns with buying new technology and trying to get the most for the least money that will last you and feel "current" for the longest amount of time.... and worrying if it will play all the newest games the best, I just have some thoughts to ponder over while you wait..............
Its ALWAYS this way, so you just have to figure out what you want, then dive in. I personally think the best time to buy is a small amount of time after an item has come out. When something is brand new, theres a LOT of little issues that come up that really delays orders - as we saw with all the people that preordered. SAME thing happened when my Dell came out. It usually takes a month or 3 to iron out the details, and get past the first release RUSH that makes them have to backorder certain parts....
And regarding the video cards, if you wait till the DX10 cards are out, first of all, that stuff is NEVER released when it is said it will be. Its almost ALWAYS pushed back. And if you wait, its very likely that when they do come out, there will be a system about to come out that has those cards, and will also have the new extreme chip, and perhaps Santa Rosa, and some new detail you arent even thinking of (did anyone forsee a new Alienware with an integrated TV tuner?). And then so youll say "hey, now Id rather get THAT one", but its not out yet and ends up being delayed a month or 2 from when they said its coming, then when it does, theres a flood of orders and you have to wait 2 to 3 more months to get it, and by the time you do, theres a newer better faster laptop announced for the same price!! And only by THEN, will there be a good amount of games that even will take advantage of DX10........
So, just see whats out, or is coming out in the next few weeks........decide what you want, and jump in. The reality is, your laptop will be FINE for most of the games for at least a few years. Remember, there are TONS of people that bought a great laptop like the 1710, right before this laptop was announced, just like there are tons of people that bought just before that laptop was available, or had the new Core 2 Duo, etc etc.
The waiting game is an endless frustrating hole to get into when you could be using your screaming new laptop...........
just my thoughts to remind you all (and myself) that its more fun to HAVE a new laptop, then to keep dreaming about trying to get the newest thing that wont be replaced with anything good for a while - cause its just that, a dream.
cheers all,
d

Right on, I agree. Don't play the waiting game that long or you'll never end up getting anything. I waited long enough for my upgrade; I put off my purchase of a dual-core notebook until Santa Rosa came out a year and a few months later.

100% agree.
Did I mention that the LCD on the 9750 is amazingly beautiful??!
Sry I had to add that. -
wow, thank you....I thought it was rather wordy myself. ha ha.
Did everyone see that new Toshiba? Is that the first laptop with the new vid cards? Its thicker though than the Alienware but I bet its competition as many gaming people may think Alienware is pricey........
honestly, I dont know where you youngsters get money to buy these things. Im 36 which puts me older than most here Im guessing.....I couldnt imagine spending this kind of money when I was 20 or so.... -
Im 23...I drive a 2005 dodge srt-4, insurance, and I pay rent, cell phone, cable internet, High def cable, you name it...
You just have to budget. -
19. I live at an apartment with 3 roommates in college but I traveled to see my parent's for the summer. I don't have to pay rent, food, etc while I'm here. I just made us of that and got an internship for the summer. Just got my lest check which ultimately finished paying for my laptop ;D

Im just saying, I think its cool for you guys to have so much at that age, I had a great job at 23 in major recording studios (just getting in the business), youd think it would pay well but it didnt even pay minimum wage! and I worked more than full time hours....I couldnt afford much at that time.
Im happy for you guys, not jealous mind you. Its great you guys can buy these great laptops so young....
