Have you tried the modded 190.38 driver from LV2Go? I don't have my system yet so I can't verify compatibility but this is the driver I have installed on the XPS M1730 - very stable.
I do know that LV2Go has had some issues with ensuring HybridSLI functionality is carried over with some of their modded INFs - so check the comments for that driver and see if anyone else has posted issues.
In regards to NVIDIA's driver, you're saying that the driver posted on NVIDIA's site for the 2xxM series (186.03) won't install?
Are you uninstalling your existing driver prior to attempting a new driver install? Not sure about HybridSLI yet and the impact this might have to the M17x, but the uninstall/install procedure I use and have always recommended to Vista/Win7 users is:
1. Uninstall existing NVIDIA display driver via Programs/Features Control Panel.
2. Reboot into Safe Mode
3. Run DriverSweeper and scan/clean any left over NVIDIA Display Driver files/entries
4. Run CCLeaner's Registry Scan and fix any outstanding entries
5. Reboot and install your driver
**Can anyone comment on this process and if it will/will not work with the M17x due to the onboard 9400M G chip?
Thanks. -

yep did it all and it dident work......i have the 186.31 drivers with the modded inf i just want advice if that is the way to go BEFORE i install it ....just want the advice of u all....thank you for responding
-
I think the modded 190.38s are the best since they have all the newest SLI profiles .
And also download the 190.38 evga SLI profiles for even more new games -
benthedogtrainer Notebook Evangelist
ok now i ask a real dumb one can u send me a link to it with the modded inf also.....please...you rock
-
@Quad:
What about the process for clean install under Vista/Win7? Does it muck up anything with the 9400M G?
Thanks.
@trainer:
http://forums.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/159-19x-series-geforce-driver-releases/ the driver and modded inf is there for you to grab. -
i use Dox 182.x
-
http://forums.laptopvideo2go.com/topic/24564-v19038-windows-7vista-64bit-nvidia/
then click on the green INf modified right next to it . extract the driver and dump that INF into the folder that was extracted overwriting the stock one. -
I will try to answer questions 2, and 3.
Question 2: You can also, or alternatively OC using the Front Side Bus adjustments in the BIOS, you just can't change the multiplier of the processor with non-extreme chips like the Q9000.
Question 3. There is no subwoofer on the M17x. The M17 has one but not the M17x. See here. -
boot into the bios and go under graphics options and at the top change them both to disable/disable and reboot and now only the 2 cards will be in the device manager. -
The 190.38 has the 9400M G in the INF - so it does support it. Isn't it better to have all GPU's running the same version? Trying to understand the reason for disabling the 9400M G. Thx.
-
.
If your an on the go gamer constantly unplugging and plugging in your machine you may want to stick with dell drivers or just true hybrid drivers in general . If your plugged in 99% of time i would use the modded ones hands down . im sure in time every release may support them all but for now get the best performers. -

YOU GUYS FRECKIN ROCK....I LOVE THIS
ok i disabled the onboard card no prob....
when i go into bios with my q9000
it says overclock but the options are greyed out and it wont let me do squat.....i gues i should just order the extreme and call it a day....damn....
ok so with my 190 drivers should i get way better benchmark scores -
You should be able to adjust the FSB and memory under the CPU options ?
No you probably wont see much better if any benchmarks but you should notice it in games especially ones with out the proper SLI profiles.
Some drivers will give your benches a few more points but not like ok i got 8000 with this driver and now im getting 10000 type of thing . -
Thanks for the feedback Quad. Understood.
I'll keep searching on this as I think its worthwhile to explore the different procedures others use. Everyone does something different - some just install a new nvidia driver over the current driver (I cringe at this).
@trainer - sorry for hijacking your thread with the process question -
benthedogtrainer Notebook Evangelist
no big deal at all......
BUT
when i read the install notes nvidia states that the new drivers automatically uninstall the old ones .... -
I always clean before installing . i have been doing it though for so many years maybe im just a creature of habit dunno.
Hybrid is still pretty new in concept and even more so for this set up . only similar set up i have seen so far is the Toshiba Qosimo and those guys should have plenty of answers by now since they have had the combo 9400m/9800gts x2 for alot longer. -
benthedogtrainer Notebook Evangelist
check it out though under the fsb or the memory they are greyed out 100%
but i think it is because i need the qx9300....according to the alienware techs......totally sucks.....BUT i can do it through ntune....is that just as good or is it a weak way to do it -
benthedogtrainer Notebook Evangelist
-
Nope all CPUs can overclock im not sure whats up with your system TBH .You dont need an Extreme CPU to overclock period. Only extra option for extreme CPUs that you dont have is the multipliers
-
Yes you can just uninstall the video drivers and then reboot and install the new ones if you want .
Just make sure when it asks you what you want to uninstall you pick remove only the following Nvidia display drivers -
benthedogtrainer Notebook Evangelist
ok......i spoke with the tech support because the rep was telling me the same as u ....until they brought out two systems one with the q9000processor and the other with the extreme and he verified that the q9000 did not let him either change the fsb or anything....damn i dont get it ...if your telling me different its frustrating....please dont think i am doubting you at all...i jsut want to overclock like everyone else and i at the latest bios ..ect everything ....but no bios overclock
-
benthedogtrainer Notebook Evangelist
got it i just installed them for the first time....love it ...virgin no more....hahah -
There are people on here with a Q9000 that overclocked thru the bios . Kilthro i think is one of them .
-
You should be able to OC with the Q9000, I've done it as well as several others. In the OverClocking page in the BIOS, you should see "Mode" or something like that at the bottom, which by default says Auto. Hit enter, and change this to Unlinked. You should be able to adjust the FSB then.
-
You can modify most drivers to work with the 9400m g, download the driver from Nvidia, extract it, look for "setup information",open the nv_disp.inf file.,
under [NVIDIA.Mfg.NTamd64.6.0] paste your OEM info, you can look for it in your oem drivers, on my Toshiba it is:
%NVIDIA_DEV.0628.01% = Section003, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0628&SUBSYS_FF001179
%NVIDIA_DEV.0862.01% = Section003, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0862&SUBSYS_FF001179
Scroll down further on the notepad and look for [Strings]
that will be your device info paste it if you are using desktop drivers and it isn't already there. For my Qosmio it is:
NVIDIA_DEV.0628.01 = "NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTS"
NVIDIA_DEV.0862.01 = "NVIDIA GeForce 9400M G"
close the notepad and select save when prompted. double click setup application and drivers should install -
Lol yeah you have to change it unlinked
.
-
benthedogtrainer Notebook Evangelist
-
-
benthedogtrainer Notebook Evangelist
ok it says unlinked....
memfreq is 1066
fsb freq is 1066
ok it wont let me change th value to go higher but it lets me go lower when i use the + or the _ keys ......what gives
thanks guys -
I could download the Dell display drivers for m17x to get the correct oem info and device info but have 5gb limit on my wireless card. I'm @ 5gb right now with 2 weeks left in the billing cycle.
-
Type in the number . Try to find someone else with the same setup to give you an idea of what to try . -
I read others using 1285 for FSB frequency, I put that in and I've had no problems with gaming and with OCCT.
-
-
benthedogtrainer Notebook Evangelist
you know if this works i am going to feel real dumb -
Lol just do it . Cant hurt anything . Ndjason has the same CPU and has tried this and was why he recommended it .
-
benthedogtrainer Notebook Evangelist
HELL YEA i love it i am now officially overclocked baby i love this...now on everest it says i have a 2.4.....crazy and my temp is like 48...think its good ....so can i keep it this way all the time...and should i change anything with the mem freq....???? -
nah just leave it be and make sure everything is stable . you could overclock your ram to 1333 or 1285 like the FSB and thats up to you but i would take it one step at a time .
-
benthedogtrainer Notebook Evangelist
i ran 3d mark and it dident realy heat up at all...pretty good..... -
Best is matched if you can run it that way yes.
-
benthedogtrainer Notebook Evangelist
-
benthedogtrainer Notebook Evangelist
oki matched them and my cpu after playing prototype for a bit my cpu got up to 58 is that ok
-
Lol thats great . For comparison on my M17 my Qx9300 hits about 80 degrees
. not sure it got that hot on prototype though i would have to try it again and monitor the temps . GTA4 will really heat up your CPU though.

They wont come and install it and you will have to do it yourself . not for the faint of heart i might add but is possible
.
As for performance difference yes there is some difference but it really depends on what you need . -
i did make a video guys
-
benthedogtrainer Notebook Evangelist
i called dell sales and they told me i could pay a big penny and have them send out a service tech to install the q9300.....or if i wanted to upgrade my video cards they would do that also...from the 260's to the 280;s.....
if they are full of crap ...would i send it out to alienware....or pay for moo to come out and do it......lol -
-
benthedogtrainer Notebook Evangelist
...i know brotha
but its not like the asus...real easy to get to...dude ,maybe i should have u come out and i will pay u to do it....lol
my first thread on any forum.....i have a video driver question
