right when i got the m17x the media keys worked fine i was able to click the alienware symbol and the alienware command center would pop up and the wireless thing worked also so everything was working good but i had a problem with the keyboard backlight going out so i called dell tech support and they did remote assistance on my computer to fix it and he was deleting all the alienware files all over the computer and registry and then he re-installed acouple files and the command center and the keyboard lights turned back on so he fixed the problem.

however, i didnt notice that the media keys didnt work anymore until now and im %99.99 sure it stopped working when he did all that deleting and re-installing.

so can someone please help me and give me some advice what i can do or check to get these keys working again, thanks guys! you're all very helpful. :D

Check if you have something called OSD installed in the Control Panel. If you don't, get it off of Dell's "Drivers & Downloads" section of their site (sorry, but I can't get you a direct link right now :( ). If you do have this installed, and it's still not working, try doing this: remove the battery from your laptop, and then hold down the power button for ~30 seconds (this resets the CMOS battery).

Also, to clarify your issue, are the buttons doing NOTHING at all, or are they doing their function, but the small window that pops up in the middle of your screen just isn't showing up? If the issue is the window just isn't popping up, and you DO have OSD installed, I can give you a quick .bat file I made to fix the issue.

    try to power off
    unplug it
    take battery out
push power button for 10-20 seconds
    put everything back
    test it out
