    Hi all, having trouble getting nvidia drivers running on my M17x (R1).

    Linux Mint 8, 32bit ... WiFi works fine with the restricted STA driver, and installing an alsa-backport for my kernel version and rebooting gives me sound.

    Code:
    $ lspci | grep GeForce
    02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GT200 [GeForce GTX 260M] (rev a2)
    03:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GT200 [GeForce GTX 260M] (rev a2)
    04:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation C79 [GeForce 9400M G] (rev b1)

    My xorg.conf:
    Code:
    $ cat xorg.conf
    # nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
    # nvidia-xconfig:  version 1.0  (buildmeister@builder75)  Thu Apr 22 11:44:23 PDT 2010

    I installed Linux Mint 8 (32bit) and subsequent reboots come up in 1200x(900?) resolution, then I changed the bit depth to 24 and now I at least get the native 1900x1200 resolution.

    I installed the restricted hardware driver (v185) and rebooted to a black screen. Had to reboot back into recovery mode to set the screen back to my "vesa" device. When I try to use Device1 or Device3 in the "Screen" section, restarting xorg or rebooting just leaves me at a black screen, and I have to reboot in recovery mode to go back to vesa. I can't use the nvidia-xconfig utility to build a working xorg.conf unless I can boot with an nvidia driver -- talk about a catch 22.

    I also tried installing the v195 driver from nvidia's web site, but that didn't help either.

    Ultimately, my goal is a working nvidia/xorg.conf configuration which will allow me to use the HDMI port on the laptop to use a dual screen setup with an additional 1900x1200 monitor, and would appreciate any help, this is driving me nuts.

    Spent several hours going over other notes, and trying two xorg.conf files which I could find.

    When I set it up such that my xorg.conf points to PCI:2:0:0 and PCI:3:0:0, xorg will *start*, I can hear the audio, but I just see a black screen. Since the thread you pointed me to seemed intermixed with ATI and nVidia users, it was a little hard to pick the best advice. I also couldn't tell from the thread whether users were disabling the dual cards and running off the integrated one, or leaving all 3 turned on, etc.

    Does anyone out there have dual 260M cards and the integrated 9400M card with a WORKING xorg.conf that I can look at? This is really frustrating.

    The only way I can even get into xorg to post these replies is to change my Device0 driver to "vesa" ... /sigh

    edit: snipped out lots of whining

    The last time I was running where Device1 (my first 260M device) was used in the "Screen" section and rebooted, I briefly saw the small round Ubuntu logo (v9.10) in the middle of the screen, then a black screen with nothing ... NumLock toggled just fine, so it wasn't locked up. I rebooted into recovery mode and grabbed the Xorg.0.log from /var/log/ if that's of any help. Looks like it's finding the nvidia cards just fine, but complaining that no monitor was found?

    Not a expert in linux just curious what graphics mode is your laptop set to? Both Gf9400 and 260M enabled or only the 260M enabled? I am not sure if Linux can take the stealth mode thing well so might as well just enable only the 260M cards try the nvidia drivers again?
