does anyone know if they are planning on making a newer GPU available for the M15x within the next month or two? i am planning on getting one at some point and but if they are planning to make a higher powered gpu available for it, i would probably wait.

i was just wondering since Nvidia already has the 280 available, and they are using ATI cards in the M17s, so i thought that maybe someone had heard something about a GPU upgrade coming soon for the M15.

i just dont really want to spend all the money to get it with a 260 and then have a new GPU become available for it the next week. Thanks in advance for any help.

How it seems to be working out, Or atleast did for me. I was told a refresh wouldn't happen for months so I bought my qx9550 m17x. 23 Days after delivery the refresh happened.

So it probably wont happen till after you buy your m15x

Another thing is if your always going to wait for the bigger and better model you'll be waiting forever....

The higher end cards are going to be VERY hot.... the 260 is a good mid level card in terms of temps while still having great performance values. Moving away from that is a risk, and probably a risk that Alienware doesn't' really want to take.

wouldn't the GTS 360m be about the same? On that note someone told me that it really isn't worth going from the GTX 260m to the GTS 360m and might even be a decrease in performance.

You can get the 240m now and just upgrade to the 280m later.

If it's the same it's the same. For the most part a 260m isn't even a whole lot different from a 9800m GTX or GT. You won't see any huge improvement on a single card solution until a 5870 which is again a much higher temp. And no most people didn't upgrade m15x laptops because of the GPU alone, it mainly revolved around the move from core 2 duo to i7. Not GPU. Although mxm 3.0 is nice.

i pretty much figure that ill be thrilled with the system with the current 260m, but you know how it is. as soon as you buy something, a new bigger better one comes out.

thanks for all the responses. i just wanted to know if there was anything concrete about a new card on the way. if there isnt anything definite, then im not going to even worry about it.

one of my friend tried to put a 5870 into his m15x, and the temp went up to 104 max, which is very very hot! Therefore he used cl liquid pad, now is 86 max, which is acceptable. The conclusion is, dislike 4870, 5870 is good for m15x, but you need something to cool it down. Scored nearly 15k in 3dmarkd06 and p8500 in vantage, pretty serious power isn't it? The cpu is 920xm.

And, this guy tried gtx 285m, the system could boot but failed to recognize it, even with the latest driver, don't know what's the problem. Anyone tried gtx 280m for the new m15x yet?

i have a feeling a gpu upgrade is imminent. the fact that dell now allows you to buy a 260m without a core i7 and that the core 2 duo version of the m17x comes with sli 260Ms as standard seems to indicate that dell is trying to deplete it's stock of 260Ms. just my speculation of course

104C? That's way too hot. Are you sure he fit the heatsink + paste on it properly?

Wow, so the M15x supports 5870's?

That's good to hear. I might go ahead and buy a 5870 if that whole heat thing was just because of improper placement of paste / heatsink like Joker said.

If the 5870 really work I would upgrade it right now. Only if it cost 500 or less :D

of course he fit the heatsink + paste on it properly, don't worry about that. Is there another way to lower the temperature effectivly?

I don't see why it wouldn't work because the clevo 15.6 offer the 5870 for it.

Hey!! This thing is a processing beast man!!!!!! I'll advise you to get a intel ssd and this think will fly.. Even though i don't have one or u could wait for them to get cheaper...

My m15x just rips anything i throw at it (effortless) and gtx 260m is a nice card as well. I have O.C my 260m and it outperforms a gtx 280m @ stock .. You can a look at m15x benchmark thread...(20-25% performance increase when oc but u don't really nees to oc)

i play almost all games at max settings

Mordern warfare 2 70fps with nax settinga and vsync off (with vsync on 55-60fps)
can play tf2, borderlands, star wars and cod world at war, left 4 dead, need 4 speed shift all at max settings without any problems(1920x1080 and full aa and af )

you can play crysis @ decent settings like 1600x 900 aa x4 afx4 get arnd 25-30fps with oc gpu @ 650/1126/1625

@thewhitewizard you pretty much just sold me on my system specs. I really wasnt worried about the 260M, but I just wanted to know whether or not anyone knew if there would be a new card for sure in the next short while.

As I said, im not really worried about a new card, i just didnt want to get a system and have a newer card be available the next week. you know how it is. anyways, thanks for the reply. Im pretty set on what my order is going to be now. +1 rep.
