Sounds like one of your GPUs isn't reading correctly, or has a REALLY bad contact with the heatsink. I'd consider opening her up, removing the GPU cooling, clean it all off, with thermal paste remover, and reapply it all.
108 degrees is far too high for long term use.

I'm going to presume that you have an M17.

    The most likely causes are:
    1. Poor application of thermal paste for the 2nd GPU heatsink connection.
    2. Defective card.

You SERIOUSLY need to contact Alienware. Now. If the GPU is running at that sort of temperature then it WILL burn out.

try a few other programmes and monitor the results. Its quite possible for GPUTool it was only stressing ONE GPU, the other was just getting hotter due to the shared heatsink. Either way 108 degrees is FAR too hot for a 3870 card.

Your primary GPU is closest to the CPU. That said in your case may as well do both as its a shared heatsink assembly :)

I wouldn't be. The 4850s run hotter than the 3870, and even my 4850s used to run cooler than that (slightly higher at idle, but 80s and 90s under load)

If you change thermal paste yourself then you'll need to change it on both cards because they're on the same heatsink. Just so you know.

If you are getting a replacement, they will replace your current alienware with a brand new m17x, you should really think on doing it that if you have warranty or get one.
