So, nvidia is supposedly going to release its delicious 300 series first quarter next year, and undoubtetly some form of mobile versions will appear.
What do you think are the chances for them beeing compatible with the m17x? Newer cards usually mean more gigawatts and bigger psu's, but with mobile cards i think they will try to keep the powerconsumption down to a minimum.
If dell can fix the latency issue and a compatible 380m card is released, id be in heaven.
Does anyone have any thoughts or fresh rumours?

My three cents -- and just opinions here. But if past history is any indicator:
1) nVidia mobile cards are usually *at least* six months behind the desktop versions. Figure Autumn 2010 at best, Spring 2011 at worst. And while the new mobile part is certain to be DirectX11-compatible, the performance gap between desktop and mobile parts continues to grow. The 380M may not be a quantum leap over the 280M (though its price is certain to be!)
2) Dell usually allows *one* video card generation upgrade. But not always. As the previous poster said, if they change the formfactor, they force you to buy a new laptop (same with the CPU socket). And they *know* you will buy a new laptop.
3) The rumor mill is that nVidia is having serious, serious, issues... as in, the 300-series desktop cards may not be released until March or even later, based on the tape-out schedule of silicon that has been documented elsewhere. If I were a betting man, I'd put my bets on ATI. The 5000-series mobile parts from ATI should be released first quarter 2010 (and I wouldn't be shocked if they managed to make them available for Christmas, or at least allow you to order the cards by then). It would time nicely with an m17x refresh. The rumor mill also states -- though since hotly denied by nVidia -- that nVidia is about to dump the consumer market entirely, as the bulk of their profits are via the server/business sector anyway.

Hmm my laptop is being built and scheduled for shipment sometime around mid Jan or later. Think I should wait to see what happens? Will dell upgrade if I decide to do that once it gets here which will be in late Jan or early Feb sometime since I'm in Iraq. Just wondering. Whenever comes out, i want the top of the line GPUs
-
If you CAN wait, then I would recommend to wait and see. All updates in regards to the Arrandale processors and new GPUs will likely occur in Q1 2010, since manufacturers will want to use the Christmas season and boxing days to clean out their inventories.

I would really like to see if the new ATI 5xxx series would fit out M17x!!
I'm hoping for the New Mobile 5870's in Xfire...Desktop like performance GDDR5 Yeah!!!
Tired of Nvidia's renaming their Moblie GPU's!! -

Not to mention, it took Intel more than a year to release Quad core mobile, the Core i7 release was much quicker in comparison.
My guess is we won't see ATI 5x series until 2011. Because ATI just started rolling out their mobile 4x series and majority of games today run just fine.
So 300m is maybe 2 yrs away imo. -
i really hope they give the M17x at least one more GPU upgrade. the performance difference in the 280m and the mobility 4870 shouldn't be considered a GPU upgrade since the performance is not much. I'm guessing that if they decide to release the 300m for the M17x, it would probably come with a new motherboard that supports Core i7. but then again that's pretty much a new laptop. I think the core i7 for laptops are jokes. i would rather have the qx9300 over the core i7 920.

Here's a story that proves that it's been confirmed:

And, in case any of you are not sure if they will be top gaming cards or just mainstream models, you can see on the article that they describe codenames Broadway, Madison and Park and, according to the article linked below, Broadway is meant for the top of the enthusiast market.

Hope an alienware M17X refresh with 2 of those top ATI DX11 cards comes as soon as Jan'10 -
Jumping into this one a bit late, but as for seeing an Alienware laptop with the new ATI's by Jan 10, good luck!
There might be a prototype by then, but I seriously doubt there will be a laptop available to gen public by then. Expect to see some working laptop with the card(s) by the first Q2 2010.
Hell, we might be so lucky to see one at CES in January, but I doubt there will be any solid tech specs on it by then. Expect to see Clevo debut a laptop with those elusive cards first, then Alienware four months later. -

Only time will tell but I am sure we will see a graphic card refresh in the first quarter of 2010. Acer is already taking orders on 5000 series cards for one of their laptop and we can expect the 58XX to be in a refreshed M17X in the first quarter of 2010. The Nvidia card 300M will be available end of first quarter as confirmed by Nvidia many times.

You have a hard time believing Nvidia can't finish changing all the 2's to 3's on their mobile cards in two fiscal quarters?
Have some faith man. -
with the shortage, who knows if Nvidia will even get their 300 series rolling out. -
You missed the Pun... what he is saying is... it wont take more than a quarter to change the label on the card from a GTX280 to a GTX3xx and market it as "New" -
nvidia 300m for m17x?
