Hey, I currently own a MX17 with the following specs:

    Video/Graphics Card: Dual 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® Go 8600M GT – SLI Enabled
    Processor: Intel® Core™ 2 Extreme X9000 2.8GHz (6MB Cache 800MHz FSB)
    Memory: 4GB Dual Channel DDR2 SO-DIMM at 667MHz – 2 x 2048MB

I was wondering a few things:

    1. How do I overclock the Processor?

    2. Would it be possible to overclock my dual graphic cards as well? If so how would I do that? Thank you for your time.

    Welcome to NBR Rosefox911.

m15x does not support overclocking from BIOS but you can use SetFSB to overclock FSB of m15x processor, see here for more details. Honestly I could not find much difference in speed by processor speed.

About your GPU be more careful.. rivatuner is among best but can hurt your hardware if you dont know what you are doing.

    Best of luck!

Thanks for such a fast reply and the warm welcome guys! I've been googling this for quite some time but I read somewhere that the

    512MB NVIDIA® GeForce® Go 8700M GT

Is nothing more than an overclocked

    256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® Go 8600M GT

Is this true? Thanks alot =]

PS: What would you recommend I overclock my graphic card to?

Technically, yes and no. The 8700GT has a bit bus of 128 x 2, while to 8600GT has a 128 bit bus and the 8700GT is clocked higher. While this doesn't make a huge difference, it makes a noticable dfifference. I'd say the 8700GT is better than an overclocked 8600GT.

I wouldn't advocate overclocking the CPU, but overclocking the graphics cards slightly, is reasonable.

Overclocking is risky, and not very rewarding. It offers short term potential, but long term damage to your system components.

Do you know if I need to contact alienware to get this video card? Would it be cheaper if I purchase it from somewhere else? Does Alienware require me to ship my laptop to them in order to have this installed? Lastly how much does a dual 8800m gtx go for? Sorry for all the questions.

Honestly should have gone for the 2.5GHz and went to 8800GTX's but if your happy than it doesn't matter. Well its too late now but yes AW can actually ship you the cards and you can install them yourself.

If you bought this off of ebay you're **** out of luck.

P.S - Its not a dual 880GTX. It is actually (2) 8800GTX's combined in SLi (Scalable Link Interface). Basically it combines the power of both the cards together for around over 1.5x performance increase.

Any idea what the price for both would have been? Also why is the 2.5 ghz better than the 2.8 ghz?

    1) you should have went for 8800m gtx
    2) the extreme processor on m17x is non-overclockable, so why not save yourself few hundred buck and go for the 2.53ghz? you can overclock the T9300 to 2.9Ghz via setFSB.

edit: oh you bought it already?

Yupe yupe, I bought the laptop already. I did contact Alienware a few weeks (?) ago and the rep told me its possible that in the near future they might allow overclocking via BIOS but then again he could have lied. Also, any idea what the price range for the 8800m gtx ( I'd obviously need 2) would be? Lastly is installing a new graphic card on a laptop hard? What about the SLI attachment? Sorry, I've build desktops before but never ever a laptop. I've only recently moved to a laptop xD Thanks alot for your help guys.

they require you to call in and have them walk you through it, otherwise you will void the warranty.

a single 8800m gtx should cost around $700, plus or minus $100, you need to call them. graphic card replacing should be an easy job, except on dell m1730 LOL.
SLI cable? they will ship it along with your cards.
