I'm looking at purchasing a friend's M15x because he needed a smaller one for college. It will not come with a warranty, unfortunately. So other than the hinges, what are issues to be aware of? If so, are there fixes to the big ones like hinges, or can i avoid them by just being careful?

-
What are the specs on his M15x / how much are you paying? -
well, the guy self-upgraded to a t9300 and 4gb RAM, as well as a 320 7200rpm HD. I'm negotiating, but it's probably going to end up around ~$1400 or less, maybe a little more.
-
GPU? (10char)
-
sorry, it's an 8800m GTX.
-
$1400 is a good price for that but just remember once your hinge goes you're ****ed.
-
is there anything i can do to prevent hinge breakage, such as just leaving the lid open? or else, i heard of a reinforcing thing called G-Mask, however it's not available in the US. Is there something else like this?
-
How well do you know your friend? If you seriously like see him everyday or at least keep touch enough, it may be okay as he can send it in for you. In the end, it's still better to get your own. Something like the G-Mask might be the only/best way of handling the issue.
Other than that really, it's a great machine. -
Leaving it open should help protect the hinge since it is not moving. It is not like it explodes cause it feels like it.
-
maybe it comes with a warranty, actually. He doesn't know if it expired or was voided because he replaced the CPU and such. Does warranty transfer over if I purchase it?
-
Warranties are completely non-transferrable, as far as I know.

EDIT: congrats on your 1000th post, Ennea! -

Yup, congratulations Ennea (",)
I wonder how long it will take Milcs to comment lol
OB -
Woohoo, thanks guys!
I give milcs a day or two. -
Milcs has moved on from making comments regarding these issues...
I contributed with enough information and facts for people to make a decision themselves! -
In any case, I think we have Stone to comment on things like this. Besides, Milcs bolded red text in his sig says enough for him. I don't think there is any need for him to say any more than that. His sig does the talking for him, pretty much. He can just post a smiley face and they'd still get it. XD

Yeah Ennea, Congrats on 1000 post.

if the hinges break, will it cease my laptop from closing or can i just use industry-grade invisi-tape to tape it back down?
And BTW, this stuff really is invisible. i have it all over my house because i cut off a piece, put it on the table and couldn't find it all of the time. -
did not anyone notice that any warranty was voided when the OP said his friend 'self-upgraded' the processor?
that right there in and of its self voids the warranty. no?
as for your liking or not....all personal and maybe to personal for us to tell you one way or another.
if your looking for confirmation and what others to decide...then I say YES...buy it. I am very happy with mine even with all the so called issues others have had. thus far (knock on wood) i am issue free with my unit.
considering what you are getting and the price...i would go for it. -

Sup ryu, you've been away for a bit huh? good to see you back.
As far as the warranty, just pop the old processor back in before you send it to get fixed, and than shouldn't;t have a problem. -
yes and thx....
(long story and not AW related....)
he could pop it in if he were the original owner...but he is buying from a friend.
so he is at strike 2. -

yeah, you got a point, he would have to make sure his friend had original chip, and than have friend send it in.
-
would i be able to buy a third-party warranty from someone like best buy, or even one from alienware?
-
probably not. Personally if you got it I think you should just tape the hinge right away. reinforce now so you don't have to later. If this invisi-tape is all its cracked up to be. You may also want to try reajusting the screws that hold the hinge together.
probably going to purchase M15x, anything to know?
